Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.

Competition news

The weather has proved indifferent this week, particularly on Tuesday when the ladies gathered for the annual spring meeting. The early starters in the morning round were greeted with a very wet course with the overnight and early morning rain. Eventually it cleared and the conditions proved the undoing for most and the CSS went to 77.

The winner was of the 18 hole event was Morag Hutcheon who out played the weather with an 80 nett 69. This is a great start to the year for Morag who has been working hard on her game throughout the winter after a successful 2015 season, and has now seen her handicap cut to 9.

The 9 hole afternoon event was cancelled due to the thunderstorm around tea time.

Short Game Championship

In better weather on Thursday, the ladies held their second annual short game championship.

The competition followed last year's format with players drawn in handicap bands playing over a 5 hole course on the chipping area.

There were some keenly fought matches, but the eventual band winners were Jaine Fieldhouse, Sue Gunter and Sue Bowler. They went on to play a 5 hole stroke play final, with Sue Gunter eventually emerging triumphant.

The pleasing thing to see in the final were the players using various club selections, and in particular with Sue the technique to use the trickier more lofted clubs to combat the slopes.

Many thanks to Viv Dondi for organising another successful competition and another year of winter squad training.

Staff news

As I'm sure you are all aware by now, Ray Goodsall our Head Green keeper has taken up a position of Course Manager at Canterbury Golf Club in Kent. I along with the rest of the Pro Shop staff would like to thank Ray for all of the hard work over the last 13 or so years that he's been here. I can remember Ray starting many moons ago and the Saffron Walden course that we had then. It's certainly changed over the years, and the course and facilities we see today are a testament to his hard work and knowledge, and the backing of the various greens committees.

On a personal note I will now have to find someone else to talk to at staff functions about our love of alternative music and Radio 6 music!

Ray, all the best to you and Linda.

Junior news

We have got another great junior competition coming up this Sunday!

The Masters Trophy tees off at 1.15pm.

This event includes the 18 hole, 9 hole and short course 9 holes competition.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in playing in this event, and the sign up sheet is up in the clubhouse!

For the 9 hole and short course golfers - If possible, would you be able to please get an adult to accompany you round as I am short on members to help out. If you need to be accompanied, please let me know ASAP and I will try and find someone. If you are unaccompanied and cannot be paired up then you will be unable to play.

Get into golf

After the success of the first two years we are doing it again!

We are pleased to announce that Saffron Walden Golf Club Professionals are running another introductory course for women who are interested in taking up the game. The programme will be run by Rob McNicholas, Aaron Howard & our new lady Professional Sarah Smith working alongside the ladies section to introduce you into the game & improve your skills.

The programme will start the week of May 1st and run for 7 weeks (no golf 31st May) at the cost of £70

We will start with the basics and aim to get you ready to play on the main golf course by the end of the 7 weeks.

The programme will be held Tuesday's 7-8pm and Thursdays 12-1pm.

At the end of the series, those who are ready and want to will be invited to join the club on a trial basis.

No previous playing experience is needed, all levels are welcome and we will provide the equipment. The initiative is designed to grow the game within the community, and get people on the fringes of the game the chance to play it.

We are lucky at Saffron Walden to have a fantastic ladies section and they would love to see some new faces at the club. So if you fancy giving golf a try, you've played before and want to get back into it or you know someone who does, now is the time to start.

Anyone wishing to take part or if you have any questions please contact the pro shop on 01799 527728 or email Sarah at pga_sarahsmith@hotmail.com.

How does £25 for your old battery sound?

We’ll give you £25 when you trade in your old battery against a new Lithium one, or a trolley with a Lithium battery. Lithium offerings are quicker charging, last longer and work out cheaper in the long run – so this is the perfect time to say goodbye to Lead Acid.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
