Second Mixed Open Win for the Greatwood's

Great weather and a course in excellent condition contributed to a competitive and enjoyable day for the 42 pairs from 29 clubs competing in the Saffron Walden Mixed Open. This was won for the second year running by Alex and Alice Greatwood from Ely GC, who, with 41 points, were 1 ahead of the field. Entrants travelled from great distances to compete, including the Wares from China Fleet GC in Cornwall, playing Saffron Walden for the first time, who enjoyed the experience so much that they intend to return in the future.

The winners were playing the Open for the 3rd time. After coming 3rd in their first year, they were delighted to win last year, and even more elated with a second victory. Their round, in a 4 BBB competition, was remarkable for Alice scoring on 7 of the first 9 holes, and Alex on 8 of the back 9. "We love the course" said Alex, "it is rightly considered the premier course in Cambridgeshire as the slopes, trees and greens present a rigorous challenge".

Victory for Saffron Walden Ladies in the Grace Norman

Saffron Walden ladies started their quest for County laurels in fine form by winning their first round match in the Grace Norman Trophy, a Foursomes Knock-Out tournament, beating Girton in a very competitive match 2-1.

The team of Morag Hutcheon, Vilma Krinks, Kiyoko McLellan, Lynda Minton, Jacquie Smith and Justine Voss battled strongly and faced a nail biting finish, as the match was all square with the final pair 1 up on the 18th tee.

An excellent final putt brought Saffron Walden in as winners.

Scratch Team Players firing on all cylinders

Four scratch team players have reached the 2nd round of the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Matchplay Championship, for the Wheeler Salver, played at Gog Magog throughout the summer.

Academy youngsters Callum Brookes and Jacob Gamble battled through their 1st round matches against past and present CAGU A players - they now play each other in the 2nd round.

Stalwarts of matchplay golf Ryan Adair and Graham Goodman have also reached the next round as well.

Injury setback pushes Walden to a 6-0 victory

You would have thought that an injury to your star player would have thwarted your team's chances of victory. Not so for the SWGC scratch team who drove to success against St Neots this week 6-0, in their latest CAGU Div 1 league game.

Mark Reeve tweaked his hamstring and had to drop out the night before. This called for Captain Goodman's "major incident plan" to come into force bringing in different voices such as Club pro Rob and senior members of the team. They took some risks but what a result.

Opening the assault, Goodman promoted Dick Southall and Callum Brookes to lead from the front against Mynott and Davie. They birdied the 10th and Brookes hit the shot of the night hooking a wedge around the trees to the 12th green for a hole win. They ran out winners 4 up.

Up next the 90's legends, Olly Tuck and Ian Macdonald took on Meeds and Gowling. Raving it up through the course they won 5up with very consistent golf.

In what was the captain's risk of the season, he paired the enviable powerhouses of Ryan Adair and Spencer Burlingham together. Ryan rose to the challenge and his putting was out of this world including a long birdie putt on the 5th hole. They impressively won 4 up.

In the other result of the week Brampton Pk won 4 -2 at Ramsey.

Brampton Pk 13pts
SWGC 12
Ramsey 9
Gog Magog 8
St Neots 6

Graham Goodman captain said "Monday night was a sleepless night, but sometimes you have to take risks and trust the team to deliver. They sure produced the goods. Ryan was immense and boy did the 90's legends deliver. We are in a good position with one point behind Brampton with a game in hand. There are many battles to be fought and we are up for it".

Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
