Walden on top at halfway stage
The Gog Magog scratch team descended on Windmill Hill last Wednesday, hoping to resurrect their scratch league season. In wind and rain the Walden boys prevented this and reached the half way stage on top of CAGU Div 1.
Mark Reeve returned to the side after relaxation at Legoland and Goodman's troops set out to do battle in this derby fixture.
The strong Gog Magog team started with their new galactico signing Smits and his partner Williams against Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve. Walden won the first hole but Gogs fought back, with Walden making some errors around the green, Gog's reached the 16th 1 up. The turning point happened when Williams pushed his drive on the 17th, and Reeve hit a 3 wood to a perfect position. Smits could only hit it short of the green. The shot of the day was by Tuck who hit a rescue to the top level of the green by the flag. Williams hit his wedge to 5 feet. Smits missed his putt and Walden holed to win the hole and go into the 18th all square. The 18th was halved so Tuck and Reeve halved the match.
Ryan Adair and Richard Southall then took on the experienced Gog's pairing of Quinney and Diss. Up against it from the start Gogs took a 2 up advantage through 9 holes. This spurred Adair and Southall on with birdies on the 10th and 12th to draw level. Southall hit his iron to 6ft on the 18th which sent shock waves through the Magog Hills and Walden won 1 up.
Bringing up the rear for Walden the colourful pairing of MacDonald and Burlingham took on Stammers and Rusted. They raced to a 5 up lead after 8 holes. Gogs fought back and they were all square after 16 holes. Walden won the 17th. Burlingham curbed his power to hit a sublime iron shot to 10ft on the 18th. Gogs missed the green and bogeyed, and it was left to Mr "dependable" Macdonald to hole out for a 2 up victory.
The 5-1 victory propelled Walden to top spot at the halfway stage of the season.

"Another fighting performance by the boys. Gogs sent a strong side out and we more than matched them. We have 4 games left of which 3 are away, so we will have to be more than on our game for the remaining fixtures".
An update from PGA Pro Sarah Smith
Last weekend at Wentworth Golf Club, for the second year running I was invited by the Golf Foundation to take part in the junior introduction to golf in the tented village at the PGA BMW Championships.
We used the Tri Golf kit to set up targets and games to invite all children at any age and any level of golf to participate. From 3 year olds having a go to the junior club golfer aged 12 with a handicap of 18, my time over the weekend I really enjoyed.
aking part at Wentworth gave me chance to pick up new ideas for games and skill challenges to take to schools we are currently working with in Saffron Walden, and add to my career development in coaching. Currently we are in 8 schools in the town and surrounding Uttlesford area, with the aim being to give children a taster in golf and get them down to the club and enrolled in our academy.
All of this is made possible with not only the support of the golf club but with the grants that the golf foundation and active Uttlesford give us in the year.
Alongside the coaching I got to watch a lot of golf, and after a hard day's work myself and fellow coach Stacey were even rewarded with an ice cream!
