Competition news

Tuck & Barker stays on course to carry off the Autumn Cup

Played over 36 holes in the same day, the Autumn Cup is Saffron Walden's Golf Club test of endurance and consistency. Michael Barker played amazing golf for the first 18 holes, including 4 birdies, resulting in a score of nett 66, 6 shots under handicap for the first round.

Knowing he had a lead of 4 shots going in to the second round, he admits to feeling nervous and got off to a shakey start, dropping shots to be 11 over par after 10 holes. Birdying the 13th helped Barker regain his focus, to end with a nett 74, total nett 140, 4 under par for the 2 rounds leaving him the winner by 2 shots from Ross Fraser. Fraser with rounds of nett 73 and 69 ended up with 142, 2 under.

The competition for the Gold Medallion, awarded for the best scratch scores, was tight, with Ollie Tuck's excellent second round of 70, 2 under par, saw him win on countback from James Sandford, as both finished with gross 149.

In the ladies competition, the small field was dominated by Jacquie Smith, whose nett 144 for the two rounds left her a comfortable winner by 11 shots from Sue Ward in second place.

Seniors section

On August 25, the Seniors team lead by Chris Martin, match captain, enjoyed a good day's golf at Bourn. Thankfully the early morning heavy rain had petered out by the time the first group teed off.

Although Saffron Walden lost 5-3, this still meant an aggregate 9-7 victory.

A special mention to Alf Magona for winning nearest the pin on the 11th.

Millennium Week - the entry notice is in the changing room. Please add your name.

The Seniors AGM & Prize Giving will take place after lunch on Friday, 7 October

See you all there.

Pros news

On Monday morning this week Sarah and I went to the Titleist National Fitting Centre at St Ives for Brand Training & Fittings for the new 917 driver & fairway wood.

The new products provides increased speed for more distance, even on off-centre hits, along with the capability for precise customisation so every player can get the most out of every drive.

Sarah gained an extra 19 yards over her 913 Driver... can you beat this?

Look out in the shop for your chance to try the new drivers and fairways at the end of September.

Club events

Last week we ran a a coaching session at Sampford Youth Club on behalf of the Ethan Rees Linwood Memorial Fund charity, and it was great to see so many youngsters enjoying a game they may not normally have access to.

The charity raises funds to support children and young people, primarily in the Uttlesford area.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
