Walden dominate CAGU Finals day

Walden scratch team players dominated the annual CAGU Finals day held at Gog Magog Golf Club last Sunday. In glorious Autumn sunshine the new CAGU captain for 2017, Mark Reeve, destroyed the field with a level par 71, and second was Luke Ryan from Ely with 72 gross.

Reeve's round included 4 birdies and an eagle on the 8th hole.

David Burt representing the seniors shot a 75 gross to finish 7th and Olly Tuck shot 76 to finish 11th. Jacob Gamble scored 82 to finish 21st and Callum Brookes shot a 90 to finish well down the field.

In the overall standings Reeve finished the year 3rd in the order of merit to the overall winner James Reason of Brampton Park.

Walden won other awards in the OOM - Burt who won best mover and shaker on the day in the OOM standings. Callum Brookes won best placed junior in the OOM. Jacob Gamble won the handicap prize in the CAGU junior order of merit.

Saffron Walden Golf Club Seniors Millenium Week 2016

Saffron Walden Golf Club Seniors Section has just had a very busy week.

Starting on Monday was the Millenium Week with three stand alone competitions with all three finishing on Friday, followed by Prize Giving and the AGM.

The size of the turnouts and the quality of the scoring show through in the results.

Monday was the Jonny Johnson Decanter with 78 entries. The day started with some fog and ground frost and was won by Chris Yates with 43 points.

The Nearest the pin on the 5th was won by Graham Jones

Wednesday was the Mashie Trophy. With 75 entries Roger McNaught was leading with 42 points until the last minute when Peter Still, the Seniors Vice Captain, came in with a very good 45 points to win.

The Nearest The Pin on the 11th was won by Hugh Paton

To cap the day there was a Hole in One on the 18th from Graham Jones

Friday was the Peter Hoare Trophy. With 77 entries this was won by David Hunt with 42 points.

The Nearest The Pin on the 18th was won by Alan Seymour

A point to note was that The Seniors Captain Brandon Chapman came in 3rd with 39 points.

The Millenium David Moss Trophy for the best total for the three events had a clear winner. Given that his handicap was reduced by 3 after his win on Wednesday, Peter Still won with a remarkable total of 115 points.

Prior to the Seniors AGM, The Golfer of the Year was announced as Bill Sandford.

The Player of the Year award went to Chris Martin

The Saffron Walden Golf Club Seniors then held their AGM and Brandon Chapman handed over the Captaincy to Peter Still for the year 2016-17.

Staff news

A note from PGA Pro, Sarah Smith

A massive thank you to all the support I have had for the WPGA International Challenge, including my 2 caddies, those who walked round, the emails and messages.

After not having the best of scores on Thursday (85/+13), I made up for it Friday by shooting 75/+3 with a bogey, bogey, bogey finish.

I didn't make the cut but hopefully there's always next year..

The practice paid off over the last few months by playing some great golf on the Friday so still very happy.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
