Thetford 4bbb Winter Series - February Medal Event
Update from PGA Professional Aaron Howard
This month's event was once again well supported by Saffron Walden members. Yesterday Thetford Golf Course showed its teeth with a tough wind and light but consistent snowfall during the round.
In the am-am event Mark Jones paired with Kevin Hayes scored 76 in the tough conditions. Meanwhile John Roberts and Tony Brown combined to achieve a 73. Steve Plumb and Colin McDonald dovetailed very well and ended on 72. Reflecting the course difficulty, the general consensus from our members after the round was that they were having to hit two longer clubs than usual into the greens and hitting the short and mid irons were nonexistent. In spite of this the am-am was won by an unbelievable 64.
In the pro-am, myself and Mark Harvey had a steady 70 but couldn't quite gel together at the right times to get any lower. This part of the competition was won by our own Gerald and Miles Collins with a fantastic 67.
Finally in the professional event, I had a great start being two under through the first five tough holes but had two costly shots during the round that ended my score on a one over par 73. Although the pros division was won by Stuart Brown with a great score of three under 69, I was very happy coming in 3rd place this early in the season.
I will have a pro-am list in the ladies and gents changing areas available shortly should anyone wish to join me in upcoming events this year. Please feel free to sign up or contact me in the pro shop.
March Junior Roll Up
The new Junior Roll Up sheet for March is now up on the junior notice board. Please remember to sign up before the day so the pro shop know numbers taking part.
This year we would like to really target all juniors to take part, no matter what level of golf you are at. We have an 18 hole category, for those with a handicap, 9 hole category for those off red tees and 9 hole short course category for those without a handicap to introduce them to playing a game on a shortened golf course.
After each roll up there is a quick presentation of prizes - it's a great way for the new beginners to meet the team squad and regular golfers!
Sarah Out In Schools
You may have seen recently Sarah has been in and out the shop as she's been introducing Tri Golf to more primary schools.
This week we came to the final week of Tri Golf with St Thomas More, a primary school in the town. We invited the class of 30 year 6's to the golf club to introduce them to real golf after their 3 weeks of Tri Golf during PE lessons.
We have been working on the programme with many primary schools in and around Saffron Walden delivering 3 weeks at the school and the final week at the golf club. After February half term Sarah is starting at Thaxted School.
Junior Coaching
Every weekend there are 5 junior classes to suit all abilities and ages of children's golf. Any child is welcome, whether member or on member.
At only £8 per Roll Up it's a great way to let your child have a go at golf and if they enjoy it, sign up to a 6 week block for £40.
