Martin steals the show against Royston

With Walden's star players on County duty vs Bedfordshire, Graham Goodman, SWGC scratch captain, fielded a team mainly made up of Academy players against Royston last Sunday.

The Walden team supported by Amherst Homes were up against it with a Royston team containing county players and a past England International. The Walden players started in a determined mood - Ian Macdonald fell 3 down early on against Daniel van der Westhuizen, the current SWGC course record holder, but turned the match around and won 1up.

The performance of the day was by young Louis Martin who came up against Stuart Phillips, a past England International. Martin was around in 1 over par with an eagle on the 6th hole and a sand save on the 18th hole which gave him a 1up victory.

Victories followed for Spencer Burlingham who won 5&3 and Captain Graham Goodman who won 5&4. Walden lost some games in the middle but a half by Jonathon Jenkins gave Walden victory by 4.5 to 3.5.

Captain Goodman said, "We said at the beginning of the season that we would play the academy players in the friendlies and it is working. In particular Louis Martin showed experience beyond his years today with a fine 1up win which included a pressure downhill 6ft putt on the 18th for a win."

Away Match v John O'Gaunt on Tuesday, 21 March

Report by match Captain Graham Jones:

Playing on the 'Old Course' at John O' Gaunt, this was a great example of the 'home' side showing their guests how to play, in the nicest possible way!

On a course that punishes you for being 'out of position', we took our medicine well, in truth we had no option as we were well beaten. There were only three couples who did get something out of their games having to play extremely well.

The match score was 2 - 6, with Bill Hall & Geoff Woolerson and Kit Bilal & Chris Martin both halving whilst the lead pairing of Clive Walker and G Jones eventually won their match by 1 hole, after being 4 down at one stage; Clive leading the fight back.

I wouldn't like you to think that our spirit was broken, certainly not Alan Seymour, who despite losing what only could be described as 'heavily', demanded that he be picked for the return fixture; he vowed to shake hands with his opponents once again on the 13th, presumably having avenged today's result!

Ladies Get Into Golf

After the success of the first three years now - we are running the programme again!

I am pleased to announce that Saffron Walden Golf Club Professionals are running another introductory course for women who are interested in taking up the game. The programme will be run by the Rob McNicholas, Aaron Howard and lady Professional Sarah Smith working alongside the ladies section to introduce you into the game and improve your skills!

The programme will start the week of April 17th and run for 7 weeks (no golf 29th May week due to half term) at the cost of £70. The final 7th week will be the 5th June. We will start with the basics and aim to get YOU ready to play on the main golf course by the end of the 7 weeks. This year for all those taking part we will also have access to the 7 hole course at Chesterford Science Park, so you can practice and play in between the lessons. The programme will be held on Tuesday's 7-8pm and Thursdays 12-1pm. There will be a maximum number of 12 ladies to each group so book in now to reserve your place! If we are oversubscribed with numbers there may be an additional class on Thursdays 7-8pm.

No previous playing experience is needed, all levels are welcome and we will provide the equipment. The initiative is designed to grow the game within the community and get people on the fringes of the game the chance to play it. We are lucky at Saffron Walden to have a fantastic ladies section and they would love to see some new faces at the club. So if you fancy giving golf a try, you've played before, taken part in this programme before and want to get back into it or you know someone who does, now is the time to start.

Anyone wishing to take part or if you have any questions please contact the pro shop on 01799 527728 or email Rob at rob@swgc.com or Sarah at sarah@smithperformancegolf.com.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
