Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.

Pros news

Captain Pro Challenge

The sun has blessed us this week on the golf course and it's been a busy week out there. For me it started last week with the Captain Pro challenge. We finished up average, if it was the Slade we would have walked off quite happy with top end mid table obscurity. I sensed Gary was a touch nervous on the first as he managed to take the assisting wind out of play but he slowly grew into it and we went out in 20 points.

We managed 3 birdies but dropped one on the second and missed short putts on four and six. The back half proved trickier despite getting off to a hot start with Gary picking up 3 points apiece on ten and twelve, we gave one back on thirteen but I managed to pick one up with a 3 on sixteen. As I'm sure a few have stood there with two to play before I was on 34 points on my own card by this point but managed to miss a two and half footer on seventeen for a par. Then after watching everyone else struggle for club selection on the last, duly followed scaring those sat having a drink on the balcony, but on realising who some of those were Gary suggested I may have under clubbed! Thankfully Gary hit a good chip and nearly rescued a par but the putt didn't quite make it.

We finished with 38 points in windy conditions but we knew we had left several shots out there. Congratulations to those who beat us, your prizes are on your accounts and thank you to Gary, Jeremy and Michael for a nice afternoons golf, in particular our opponents for allowing us to sneak 8 bits from you.

Coaching news

Jock Stewart Coaching

The last couple of weeks have seen the start of the team coaching for the men's and junior squads. The last two Wednesdays the Jock Stewart squad have met in their bands and we have done some swing coaching on the range followed by a couple of holes foursomes. Leading on from what Simon Hawkins had built up Mark Harvey has taken on a competitive squad keen to improve. Their first match is against Brampton away and I'm sure all support would be greatly welcomed.

This weekend we will be putting the juniors through their paces to blow away any early season cobwebs and try to get them to hit the ground running as we have their squad coaching. They open up the season at the weekend against St Neots in the Friendly Cup, which tends to be anything but.

This week also saw the end of the ladies Thursday squad coaching with a beat the Pros challenge. Despite getting off to a hot start Sarah and me made Gary and me look quite economical with the chances we blew and could only get round in 35 points leaving god knows how many birdie putts out there. I can only say that playing with Mr's Seymour, Dondi and Harris at Flempton on very over dressed sandy greens the day before must have taken it out of me.

Swing Analysis - By Pga Pro Aaron Howard

Morley Jones has been struggling with his long game consistency either pull hooking his iron shots left or slicing his woods right.

As shown in the first picture, Morley swings on a steep angle that leads him into an out to in swing path swinging across the golf ball and target line. With this swing it is difficult to achieve any consistency of strike and it's down to how well Morley can time his hand action to control the clubface and the direction of his shots.

What we did was to move Morley's swing more on plane (as shown between the lines in the 2nd picture) and control his clubface release with a more consistent and reliable body turn rather than just the hands.

The result is that Morley can now compress his shots much better and a higher percentage are now going on target.

Tournament news

Update from PGA Pro Aaron Howard

This past week I participated in the East of England Qualifying School over two days at Essendon Golf Club. Despite how pleasant the course looked, I was amazed at how wet it was under foot. It played much longer compared to Saffron Walden as drives were landing and stopping instantly.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, I managed to play steady golf scoring two rounds of +2 and in round two had back to back birdies and got onto the par 5 13th in two with a mid-iron for another birdie. This helped see me finish 17th out of almost 80 professionals. I am pleased with this result as the ranking I achieved now allows me to compete in the bigger order of merit events throughout the season!

I have now put a list up in the Gents and Ladies changing rooms for upcoming Pro-Am's should any members wish to join me. They are good fun and normally a great day out.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
