Some of you may have thought you were imagining things last week if you saw Aaron and me on the golf course together, but we do occasionally get out to play and we were actually practicing together for Monday's East Region qualifier for the National PGA 4BBB Championships at Bush Hill Park.
I'm pleased to say it was not in vain and we managed to knock it round in 64 and won the qualifying round so now move on to the national finals at St. Mellion.
If you had seen us play last Thursday you would have got very generous odds on this but we managed to dove tail well round a tricky, tight and firm Bush Hill Park.
Starting on the second to avoid slow play as the first is a par 3 we got off to a flyer as I rolled in a 30 foot putt birdie, and Aaron did likewise on the 3rd. Stunned by our start we dropped a shot at the following hole! We plodded along patiently over the next few holes with Aaron hitting pretty much every fairway and green over the middle part of the round, and finally getting his rewards with birdies on 9,12 and 14.
Feeling a bit guilty for not contributing more birdies I managed to get off par parade with a 2 on 16 followed by a birdie 4 on 18. I managed to par our last hole for -6 which to our surprise was the lowest score in. We look forward to representing the club in Cornwall.
Aaron's next stop is a Open qualifying at Luffenham Heath next Monday and I'm sure along with me you'll all wish him the best for then.
Senior's Stableford Cup
On Monday 9th June, 35 players at Saffron Walden Golf Club competed for the Senior's Stableford Cup (also known as the EGGS Cup!). With the course in really excellent condition and a lovely Summer's day everyone had a good time, although perhaps, some more than others.
The winner with a magnificent 43 points was Alf Magona with Brandon Chapman second and Jim Mein and Barry Kingsley third and fourth respectively. Nearest the Pin on the tricky 5th was David Linay. The day at the club was completed with an excellent lunch.
