Hello and welcome to this week’s newsletter.

It will be short and sweet this week as we are all playing in the Pro Am today and probably playing as you read this.

Junior golf

Keith Mogford Trophy

It's been a busy week for the juniors, Wednesday saw them take on the weather conditions and interesting pins in the Keith Mogford Trophy. The 9 hole winner was Toby Hamilton with a nett 39 and the overall winner was Leo Bonser with 36 points.

The runner up was Josh Izod with 32 points, for those of you concerned that Josh hasn't won anything for a fortnight, don't panic he been playing in competitions across the East of England and I'm delighted to say with a lot of success.

Last week he qualified to play at St Andrews after winning through a qualifier at Cambridge Lakes and this week he topped that by qualifying for a trip to Spain in the Junior European Sky Sports Open. He won the under 13, under 18 and best nett with a gross 76 at Clacton. Set your Sky plus, the finals will be televised on Sky in November. Not bad for someone who’s just turned 12!

Ladies section

Kerchiss goes from Strength to Strength

Last Tuesday 3 trophies were up for grabs for the ladies at Saffron Walden Golf Club, awarded for the best nett medal scores in the 3 divisions.

Jo Kerchiss had the round of the day to win the Saffron Trophy ( handicaps 21-28). Jo only gained her handicap last year, and her game is going from strength to strength. She followed up a hole in one at the 5th in the previous week with a nett 73, 1 below handicap, including 4 pars.

Justine Voss followed up her ladies championship victory by a nett 74, to handicap, to secure the Walden Trophy (handicaps 1-20). She dropped 3 shots on the outward 9, but birdies at the 10th and 14th put her back on track for another consistent performance.

The Crocus Trophy (handicaps 29-36) resulted in a really close finish, with 3 players tied on nett 80. Christine Simmonds was delighted to carry off the trophy on countback, ahead of Judy Mcleaod and Anne Cunningham.

Seniors Match

On Thursday Jon Sams, as Seniors Match Captain, led a team to take on St Neots away.
Jon had a lot of last minute call offs which tested team selection! Chris the St Neots Captain "ricked" his back on the 1st tee and had to find a last minute sub - would you believe it??!!! And that game ended in a half. Which was better than can be said for the rest! Eric Grant won the nearest the pin on the 9th and tried hard to win it again off the 10th tee!

Warning to those with radio controlled trolleys - one of the St Neots team lost control of his and it ended in an adjacent lake! He waded in up to his waist having taken off shoes, socks and trousers and managed to rescue the trolley minus three clubs still in the lake. A further step in would have taken the water up to his neck so he left them. An interesting insurance claim?

A good day was had by all but the result was a loss of 6 to 2.

Double First for Sarah

Small swing changes gave Sarah Smith, assistant pro at Saffron Walden Golf Club the edge in the 6th of the WPGA One Day Series at Salisbury and South Wilts Golf Club. An excellent birdie on the first hole got her off to a confident start; after the first 9 she was -3. Strong wins made the par 5 10th and par 4 11th play long; 2 bogeys in a row left her at -1. She kept her nerve and finished level par, too strong for the rest of the field.

This great win also secured her first place in the LETAS Order of Merit with only one event to go; and therefore a likely place at the next level, the Access Tour, next season.

It was a fantastic weekend for Mizuno with their first win with the shortly released MP18 irons by Jordan Smith at the Porsche Open and Jonathan Vegas the other side of the pond with MP5!
