Match Vs East Herts
On Monday 14th the SWGC Seniors went into this match with some baggage from the away leg at East Herts on 26th June. In that match we were comprehensively put to the sword 5.5 to 2.5 and some of the individual matches produced unacceptable results. SWGC's best player, Alan 'Golden Balls' Seymour, went down 7 and 5. Our biggest and most productive ringer, Professor Derek Green lost by a cricket score, and to add insult to injury, they stuffed our Chairman. But perhaps the biggest outrage on the day was the performance of my partner, big Mal Thorne. I got us off to a flyer with some superb play over the front 9 and we turned round 3 up, but when I took a well-earned breather on the back 9, he conspired to toss away that advantage and we could only halve it. So the Riot Act was read by the Match Day Captain and it was made clear to a number of players that they were drinking in the last chance saloon; the Gulag beckoned. What a response from the team! Golden Balls stormed to a magnificent win and is now restored to his rightful place as the clubs top man. He is giving a talk with slides at the clubhouse this Saturday- don't miss it. Colin Brown avenged his away defeat in fine style, Eric Grant and Alf Magona claimed notable scalps in their matches. The Chairman did the needful with a classy win. But in the main event, me and the Thornicator versus John Tass and David Mann, what a thriller! John and David have a combined age of over 150 and are both crafty, capable percentage golfers, whereas me and Mal are much younger, so our plan is to contain the old guys until the back 9, drain them of their energy and then stamp on them. Sure enough, over the front 9 their better ball score was gross 43, net 42, a score that under most other circumstances would have put them well ahead. They had reckoned without the Thornicator; he matched them shot for shot, hole for hole. Of course I was playing just as well as him, but it didn't show up on the scorecard; you know how it is sometimes....anyway, we turned round 1 down when it could have been 3 or 4. I promptly took 10 with a classic par, 3 onto the green and 2 putts, to level the match whereupon there was a fall of magic golf dust from Heaven, it fell on big Mal and for the next 6 holes he was sublime. He shot a tap in birdie on 11 and 5 pars on 12-16 playing some splendid golf; it was all over on 15 when our man clinched that hole with a net par to take it 5 and 3.On ther day he shot 83, nine under his handicap, with one birdie and 9 pars, a performance that will live in the memory for a long time.
Overall we won the match 6.5 to 1.5, and we took the seasons rubber against East Herts 9-7, possibly the greatest comeback since Lazarus. Sadly Professor Green was unable to reverse his result, he went down again and has since been despatched to the Gulag to reflect on his performances in losing home and away. Onwards, upwards.
