Bourn Match Report
Thursday, 24 August saw the Seniors play their hotly anticipated return fixture at Bourn. Things got off to a flying start in the first match as Tony Collett holed out for a nett birdie on the par three first to go one up. Although the lead in the first game changed hands several times, eventually Chris Martin holed out on the 18th to win a hard fought game one up. Saffron Walden were off to a flying start. However, the next six groups trailed in with varying tales of woe, the common theme being defeat, in one case by 8 and 6. It was left to Ian Hassall and the widely respected Emeritus Professor Green to restore honour to Saffron Walden by winning the last match by two and one. So Saffron Walden won this year's rubber by 15 to 13! Congratulations to Roger McNaught who won nearest the pin on the 4th and to Colin Bailey who received a special "Boss" award for the shot of the day, perhaps the shot of the year. On the par 5 13th, Colin holed his wedge from 110 yards for a par. The ball didn't bounce at all, just pitching straight into the cup. There are various reports as to the exact distance but we have to trust Colin's story that it was 110 yards. |
