Welcome to this week’s newsletter, Rob is away in Bristol with The Slade so has put me in charge of this week’s newsletter. A quick mention to the greenkeepers’, I had a nine hole playing lesson Wednesday this week (I won't name who took me out in the stormy rain!) but I thought the course is definitely coming along nicely, ready for the hopefully soon to arrive, summer ahead. Although looking out the window writing this now in the pouring rain, let’s hope the sun arrives soon.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the read. |

[* END *] Growing the game
You may have seen on the Golf Club's Facebook page I've been busy delivering Tri Golf in many Primary Schools in and around Saffron Walden. I'm off to Thaxted Primary School this afternoon to deliver another four week programme to their year 4's and 5's to interest and give them ago at playing golf during their PE lessons. It's great to see the children involved with a sport that they may never have played before with an invite to come back to the club to join our growing junior section. |

Tuck soars to claim the Friendship Cup with 6 birdies Olly Tuck had to produce an outstanding round to carry off the Friendship Cup, one of Saffron Walden Golf Club's oldest and most prestigious trophies. This 65 year old Cup was presented to the Club by 20 fighter bomber wing from USAF Weathersfield. Tuck shot an impressive 2 under par gross 70, nett 68. After 6 birdies, he was on course for an even more impressive score, but dropped shots on the last 2 holes. Despite this he claimed the trophy from runner up Joseph McGuire, who also finished with a nett 68. McGuire had a scintillating start to his round with 3 nett birdies, and his outward gross 41 was 4 his handicap. However after dropped shots on the back 9 he had to settle for runner up on countback. |

Thursday, 19 April - Ian Hassall was Seniors Match Captain in the home match v Bourn
The weather was fine and the course was in excellent condition, given all the rain we have had with the greens getting faster!
Bourn had their Nearest the Pin on the 18th and it was won by Colin Hurst. It was as no surprise to hear that we had our NTP on the 5th and it was won by Alan Seymour!
Match Captain Ian with partner Tony Gomes secured a 4&2 win. Malcolm Thorne and Andy Barker secured a 3&2 win in a tightly fought battle! Overall the Team beat Bourn 5 and a half to 2 and a half.
This was followed by a excellent meal. Tony Gomes then closed the event by reading the famous poem - A GOLF BALL, much to everybodys amusement.
The return away match is on Thursday, 23 August.

Monday, 23 April - Nick Rouse was Seniors Match Captain in the home match v St Neots
Again the weather was kind to us with Ian and the boys working hard to present a fine Course. Well done, the St Neots players were all commenting.
St Neots had their NTP won by Colin Busby. Our NTP was won on the 11th by last years Captain Peter Still. Interesting to see that they were the only names on each!
The Match was won by Saffron Walden 5 and a half to 2 and a half. Notable results were Seniors Captain Bill Sandford with partner Gerry Murphy won by 6&5 and Brandon Chapman with partner Colin Bailey won 4&2.
The return away match is on the Thursday, 26 July.

Tip of the week - stop your slice
Paula’s swing changes last week were great, we improved her strike which gave her more distance with the irons and also stopped her bad shot- (usually a slice or occasionally a pull to the left).Your see as the videos pause, the different position her club is in on the half way back take away move.
The video on the left shows Paula's old swing where she takes the club away outside her feet line, on the way back down this leads the club to be more outside the line there for causing a lot of side spin on the ball to the right as she cuts across.
|
|
The video on the right shows a squarer position half way back, this means it's parallel to her feet line. If she is square on the way up, it's a lot easy to be square on the way back down to impact. As you can also see in the right hand side correct video, the club now hits the ball and continues to travel through on the line of the target, therefore hitting a much straighter shot and improving her strike too! Great lesson Paula, now time for the results.

Urethane cover? So what... |
A common phrase we hear here in the shop is: “It’s round and white, it can’t be that different”. The truth is that every single golf ball is unique in some way – whether it’s the ball’s core, layers or dimple pattern – but there is one thing that all premium balls have in common… |
Try Urethane with the MP-S Like all tour-level golf balls, the Mizuno MP-S boasts a Urethane cover, which sets the bar for cover materials. Urethane – a soft and flexible polymer – will give you the highest possible spin rates combined with the best feel; benefits you will really notice when hitting chip and pitch shots. However, if you like to play lower flighted chip-and-runs you might prefer other options in Mizuno’s range that are made with Surlyn covers. While this type of cover doesn’t generate as much spin, it is slightly more durable and offers a cheaper alternative. |
|
| As you can see on these 50-yard pitch shots, the extra spin from the Urethane cover ball on the right helps it to stop much quicker than the Ionomer cover ball on the left, which rolls out on landing. |
