Welcome to this week’s newsletter. |
Development Golf As the season gets into full swing we have had a busy week coaching. Sarah did her monthly Get Into Golf session, this week it was at the science park where we can use the 7 hole course there. We are also taking the ladies Get Into Golf group there next week where 15 of them will take to the course, some for the first time and see what the hype is about. Staying with development golf Aaron and I have been leading a group of intermediate junior members to improve and get them playing more. We have a group who are relatively new to the sport but keen to get going and the club have encouraged us to develop them. Hopefully they will come through the ranks and make their way into the junior squad who we taught on Wednesday morning. It was the third get together of the year and Sarah and I led them on a swing analysis and short game session. As you can see from the snap shots below, some have great promise and hit positions in the swing naturally that some have tried years to get to.

I'm delighted for the two lads shown in the photos to be part of the squad as one, James Hamilton has progressed his way through the Saturday classes and the other, Oliver Allen got into golf after Aaron and I did some work in a local school about 4 years ago. The juniors have a busy couple of months coming up with competitions and matches and we wish them well. |
Two out of Two! (Friday, 25 May - Saffron Walden v The Links, Newmarket at SW) |
The Ladies Jean Wilkinson Team followed up their earlier victory this month against Ely City with a strong performance against an ‘in form’ Newmarket team. They got off to a great start, winning the first three matches - Lynda Minton 2&1, Jaine Fieldhouse 4&2 and Alex Sparrow 4&3 - followed by Deb Bowler who after being three down at one stage of the game fought back to end the match on the 18th all square. Sue Ward secured two points for the Team with a convincing 5&4 win. Final result Saffron Walden 9 points, Newmarket 5.

The Friendship Trophy (Saffron Walden v Bishops Stortford) The inaugural match of the Friendship Trophy was played at Bishops Stortford on Saturday, 26 May 2018. This new trophy, generously donated by Simon Noakes, commemorates the close ties and friendly games played between our two clubs in recent years. Two teams of eight mixed pairings each. The format chosen was 4BBB Stableford, with each teams net results being added to give a grand total per side.
|
Played on a beautifully presented course in superb weather, Saffron Walden captained on the day by Tony Brown and partnered by Justine Voss set off well. All in all the matches were closely contested except two, but even then the results almost cancelled each other out. The final result was Bishops Stortford 252 points Saffron Walden 246 points. The trophy going to Bishops Stortford for the year, but we will win it next year! |

Two of the latest iron models that are proving very popular with our members are the TaylorMade M3 and M4. The former is packed with technology like Face Slots, Speed Pockets and tungsten weighting to suit better players looking for more distance, while the latter enjoys all these benefits in a larger head that is very forgiving. |
