Welcome to another exciting edition to Saffron Walden Golf Club's weeklty newsletter. We hope that you're having a good week on and off the golf course. Enjoy the read. |
Captains' Weekend As the hot weather continues the course is looking magnificent but is proving a tough test with the bouncy ground making it difficult to hold fairways and attack greens. This was shown last weekend on Captains’ weekend. It started on Friday night where junior captain, Charlie Carter hosted a three ball Texas scramble involving older and newer juniors giving them a chance to integrate together. I played with Jamie Price and Archie Hazel for eight holes, where I left them at five under for Fabian to join in for the remaining ten holes as I took a well-earned rest at the halfway house! I don't know what went wrong on the back nine but we didn't win and we're pipped to it by Katie Stevens, Hettie Carter and Will McKernon.
The following day saw a fantastic turn out, and spread again at the halfway. I was partnered with the ever reliable and steady Richard Negus. We played steady golf, dove tailing pretty well without excelling. We managed 40 points having made three bogeys on the back half, which was disappointing but a fair score. We didn't expect to be anywhere near winning it but finished up just three behind the eventual winners, George Reynolds and Gordon Plumb. Well done to them and thanks to our playing partners a Dave Burt and Ian Greig. After many danced long into the night, Harvey and Price, The Sunday saw the mixed competition , won by The Krinks who beat playing partners the Mintons. Thanks to all those who helped, took part and help raise money for the captain's charity.

Saffron Walden stay in the top division of the Cambridgeshire Scratch League
Saffron Walden played St Neots this past Wednesday in the last round robin match of the 2018 Cambridgeshire Scratch League. The first pairing of Brookes and Adair took on St Neots Loveday and Meeds. The match was tight throughout, with the first 11 holes being won by either one of the teams with no halved holes. At the turn, St Neots were one up, however by the 16th hole Brookes and Adair had managed to gain a 1 up lead with some solid iron play by Brookes and some excellent putting by Adair. Unfortunately, they lost the 16th and the 17th hole to lose the match 1 down. In the second match, King and Fraser took on Waywood and Northfield. The Walden pairing played strongly on the front side, making the turn with a slim lead, however on the back nine the St Neots team piled on the pressure, eventually taking out the match 4 and 2. In the final match, Burlingham and Brown, took on St Neots Brister and Heir. The Walden pairing started strongly, winning the first hole and managed to maintain that lead to the turn. On the back nine Burlingham and Brown stepped up a gear and finished with a very strong 5 and 3 win. Despite losing the match, Saffron Walden will remain in the top division for 2019 and will play return playoff matches against Gog Magog, Ramsey and St Neots to decide the 2018 Scratch League winners. |
Many thanks go to the Walden‘s green staff, for setting up the course so well, and their catering staff for the much excellent meal at the end.
Results: Foursomes Adair & Brookes lost to Loveday & Meeds - 1 down King & Fraser lost to Waywood & Northfield - 4&2 Burlingham & Brown beat Brister & Heir - 5&3

Seniors vs East Herts GC
Monday, 25th June saw the long awaited away match against East Herts Golf Club. As usual the weather was hot and the course was in great condition. The greens were fast and ready for the Pro-Am on Friday. Rob is playing so we wish him luck! Match Captain Malcolm Thorne standing in for Tony Clarke who had gone to Croatia. On Sunday morning I had an email from one player who after dancing on Saturday night had to go to A&E, followed by a phone call at 5.30 to lose another. It would be a tough start, but I had a great team including our Club Vice Captain Tony Brown. The banter was very good if not dangerous even during an excellent lunch. It was a very tight match with Colin Brown & myself only losing on 18th when we were dormi 3 down. The match was lost 4 ½ to 3 ½. PS Tony did win with a 5&4! Report from Malcolm Thorne. |
Golf Sixes League As you may have read from last week’s newsletter, the first game of the Golf Sixes Event was played at Kingsway Golf Centre on Sunday 24th June. As a team of 6, the pairings worked together to score a Texas Scramble format in pairs to earn points for the hole. A 10 being 1 point and a hole in 1 being 10 points & everything in between. The weather stayed lovely for us and the short par-3 was a brilliant way to encourage the children who may not have played on a course before to take part in the event. It was also great to see so many parents come to stay and support the event! The team for this event included: - Isabel Garner & Toby Hamilton.
- Nelly Rowlandson & Nancy Rowlandson.
- James Hoar & Igor Hextall.
A huge well done to the six for coming in first position for the day! The scoring was very close and the team finished just one point in front of second place & two points in front of third place. Our next match is on the 15th July hosted by Bourn Golf Club, followed by 29th July at Kingsway again. |

Lady Captains Day! Tuesday this week I was lucky enough to be invited to play in Justine's Lady Captains Day. The weather was pretty warm but it was great to see so many ladies playing and also other members at the half way hut! Thank you to Viv Dondi and Elaine Purcell for being part of my team, we had some fun giggles on the way round, including looking for a couple of balls in completely the wrong place- must have been the Pimm’s at half way?! Well done to everyone who played.

Wednesday 27th June- WPGA Event Playing in Lady Captains Day on Tuesday, it was a good warm up for Wednesdays WPGA One Day Series at South Herts Golf Club! The course played great & both fairways and greens were very lucky to be pretty green after all the sun we have had. A chilly start to the 8am tee off, but by hole five the sun had come through and back to warm temperatures with a slight breeze too. I was really happy with how I played & also with much improved putting after spending a lot of time on the putting green in the last few weeks with Rob's help - thank you!
I had a steady front half of one under par, including an eagle on a par-5, taking me to three under at one point, followed by a one over back half with a couple of tricky holes in, scoring level par in total.
I'm very happy to say I came tied second, the winning scoring one under par, not too far away! This has also scored me some Order Of Merit points, taking me from 12th to second position on the table for the Ladies Access Tour Qualifier. |
The next One Day Series is at Kedlestone Park on Monday 9th July, one of my favourite courses from the One Day events. On Monday, myself & Rob are also going to Hankley Common Golf Club for a practice round for the Ladies British Open Qualifier, which is being played on the Monday 16th July. It would be great to see some of coming to watch if you are free. |

Which bracket do you fall in? |
There’s one thing that you'll always need in abundance when playing golf and that’s balls - and plenty of them. Each golf ball we sell offers different levels of feel and performance at varying price points, meaning we have something to offer all playing preferences and budgets. |
| Bang for your buck Balls at a cheaper price point usually have one key performance benefit rather than offering a little of everything. This Callaway Warbird follows the trend by offering maximum distance with your longer clubs thanks to its aerodynamic dimples and high-energy core, giving you lots of power for little expenditure. |
| The all-rounder If you’re looking for more balanced performance through the bag but without the premium price tag, this Callaway Supersoft ball is designed to be long, straight and soft. It doesn’t spin as much as the Chrome Soft, but its low compression core helps create long, high flights that land softly. |
| Tour performance The saying 'you get what you pay for' certainly applies when it comes to golf balls. Callaway's Chrome Soft is their premium option, and it's easy to see why, with a soft urethane cover for short-game spin and a graphene-infused core that boosts ball speed and provides more iron control. |
