Welcome to this week’s newsletter. As you read this I should be up at Gainsborough with Mark Jones as PING fit him for new equipment. I have never had a company ring up in a panic to ensure that they have long enough clubs in stock with all the right shafts and components for someone as PING did on Wednesday.

As the final part of the season draws to a close, there's a couple of new products coming out on the market. On Monday I had the privilege of testing out the new Titleist TS drivers and as ever with their product I was impressed.
With the 917 I was able to add length and consistency and with the new product I added another 12 yards, not something Titleist are renowned for. The driver is actually longer in length shaft wise to compete with other brands, the face is thinner and it produces less spin which is something I battle against.
As you will see we have a demo day coming up early October just after the launch.

Thank you to everyone for the birthday messages and all that attended the beer fest at the club last week. A big thank you especially goes to Sue Ward for making an array of cakes including my favourite carrot cake!

Sarah Smith - The Last WPGA One Day Series Of The Season On Thursday this week I played at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Course in the final WPGA One Day Series of the season. The overall score, doesn’t reflect Thursdays round too much, definitely the worse score of the season but all down to four bad (lost ball) tee shots! ‘FORE RIGHT!’ (Hehe!) It was a very strange round starting birdie, par, but all in all I’m very pleased with the 14 other holes and I take away a huge positive that my putting has improved no end due to a fitting for a new Scotty Cameron putter.

…I’m VERY HAPPY to announce that I have finished 3rd (out of 51 WPGA ladies in the UK) in the Ladies European Access Tour Series, Qualifying Order of Merit for 2018. This has invited me to play in the Ladies Access Tour Event at Stoke By Nayland Golf Club on Thursday 14th, Friday 15th & (hopefully) Saturday 16th September. If anyone would like to come and support the event is free of charge and a great event to watch! If you would like to see a very colourful scorecard, click here to view the competition results.

Dewhurst and Brown Triumph in Ladies Open Conditions were perfect for the large field at the Ladies Open at Saffron Walden Golf Club last week. 104 ladies from 38 clubs took part, and competition was fierce for the major places. Playing 4BBB with a twist, Lois Dewhurst from East Herts GC and Beryl Brown from Brickendon Grange won with 45 points. They are regular returners, having played in the last 6 Opens at Saffron Walden, winning together for the first time. Steady golf by Dewhurst, a great 4 points on the 4th by Brown, and scoring on every hole contributed to their victory. |
In second place were Mary Anne de Cruz and Claire Sines from Woolston Manor (43 points), with Mary Hubbard and Pam Bowler from Bourn in 3rd (41 points). Most unusually for such a large field, Julia Smith of Royal Cromer won both the nearest the pin on both the 5th and 18th holes. |

Seniors Annual Vegetable
Here you have a photograph of Head Judge Tuppa Wiseman presenting the magnificent trophy to Andy Barker, this year’s winner of the Seniors Annual Vegetable growing championships. Runner up was David Wiseman and ‘highly commended’ was Clive Walker. Following the event the exhibits were auctioned by Seniors Captain Bill Sandford, raising over a £100 for the Captain’s Charity.

Let’s face facts: improving your wedge play is going to help your scores and lower your handicap. Rather than trying to guess how hard or long you need to swing to hit a specific yardage, we recommend having three distances that you can hit with each wedge. To do this try and learn the clock technique we’ve described below. |
| 9 o'clock swing The first position to master is where your arms point to 9 o’clock at the end of your backswing, as shown above. It should then mirror this on your forward swing to ensure consistent distances, finishing around 4 o’clock. |
| 10 o'clock swing Next, learn your average carry yardage for each wedge with a backswing position that reaches 10 o’clock and a forward swing that finishes at 3 o’clock. This is similar to a three-quarter swing and will help to flight shots. |
| 11 o'clock swing Finally, take each of your wedges and find out your average carry distance with a full backswing. This shot will fly the highest of the three techniques we’ve just explained and roll out the least. |
