In the afternoon singles, Walden needed 5 and a half points to turn the match around and win the cup. Mike Nuthall gave a motivating meassage individually to his players and so all players were rearing to go and put Walden’s name on the cup for the third time in its history. In the first pairing, Walden’s Adair took on Ramsey’s Thorburn, in a tightly fought match through the front 9. However at the turn Adair, who played fabulous golf tee to green throughout the match, showed his class to take a 3 up lead with the 3 to play winning the match 3&2.
In the second pairing Walden’s Burlingham took on Ramsey’s Holland, both players fought hard but by the turn Holland had a 2 up lead. Holland kept up the pressure and took the match out 4&3. In the third match Walden’s Brookes took on Ramsey’s Wright. Brookes, who was in excellent form, especially with the putter, racing to a 4 up lead through the turn, however Wright fought back strongly to bring the match back to 1 down by the 14th hole. Brookes then applied the pressure with solid golf to take the match out 3&1. Olly Tuck played consistent golf and won 4&3. Richard Southall after a birdie on the 10th closed his game out and won 4&3. Cam Brown faced an inform Hodgkin and lost 2up. As all the reaming matches reached the 15th hole the teams were at 5pts each. It was left to the Walden stars of the morning to deliver the victory. Goodman’s cut from the fairway bunker around the front of the lip on the 16th to the green sealed a 4&2 victory over Gear. The win for Walden was made certain by the impressive Louis Martin who slotted home 3 birdies for a 4&3 victory over Cripps. The final result was a 7-5 victory for Saffron Walden in a turnaround which had echoes of the miracle of Medinah from the 2012 Ryder Cup. The Ramsey team showed great sportsmanship and played in a very competitive spirit and it won’t be long before success come their way. They brought over tremendous support and caddies as.well. Also, many thanks go to the Saffron Walden green staff, for setting up the course so well, and their catering staff for the much appreciated meals. The officials David Orwell, County President, John Willams rules and Neil Hughes provided great organisation to make the day a success. Congratulations to Saffron Walden in winning the Goddard Cup-the last time in 2014.
