Competition news

Seniors Peter Hoare and Millenium Trophy

Friday the 5th of October dawned with a two tee start of the Peter Hoare Trophy and the 3rd Round of the Millennium Trophy. The weather cleared to a warm dry morning.

The nearest the pin was on the "new" 18th and was won by Steve Elvidge.

In 4th place was Club Vice-Captain Tony Brown with 38 points. 3rd place was Mike Bassett with 42 points. On countback in 2nd place was Brandon Chapman also with 42 points, but the winner also on 42 points was Terry Bowler.

This then left the results for the Millennium Trophy, in 2nd place Chris Yates with 102 points and the clear winner was Brandon Chapman with an excellent 106 points. Brandon was presented with his trophy by Trisha Moss as in the below.

The group photo above shows all the main Trophy winners:
- The over 75s 20 H/C plate was won by Roger Smout
- The Seniors Golfer of the Year was won by Clive Walker
- The Club Man of the Year was won by Bryan Lewis, who completed all three rounds

Bill Sandford stood down as Seniors Captain and the new Captain Nick Rouse took over at the AGM.

Junior golf

School's Competition

Thursday this week we held the Saffron Walden & Uttlesford Schools Competition at the Golf Club. 22 children came to the club and played 5 holes off of the new blue tee markers, representing their school. Mainly year 5 & 6’s took part, both boys and girls - the work we have done in schools fits in well with this competition as they have all had an insight of the game during PE lessons!

We are continuously working within the schools in and around the town, delivering the 4 week programme, encouraging children to have a go at a sport that they may not get a chance at playing outside school. This year so far we have introduced 28 new juniors to weekend coaching, where 4 have become junior members.

The good old days

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers.

Time tunnel

Take TaylorMade for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic r7 Quad driver way back in 2004. The r7 was memorable for introducing the then-revolutionary concept of changeable weights in a driver, which was a massive shift from the conventional 'one weight fits all' approach. The r7 Quad is a classic club, and is certainly remembered with fondness.

Fast-forward to the present day and TaylorMade has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of the M3. The M3 really shows just how far we've come in terms of moveable weights, with a Y-Track feature that allows golfers to adjust their settings for optimal trajectory, maximum forgiveness, or less spin.

So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the M3. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the M3 with as much fondness as the r7 Quad!

How times have changed...

Remember when you used to get ready for a round of golf during winter - you'd put on your vest, followed by a turtleneck, followed by a polo, then a jumper, before finally putting on your jacket. Not only was it a complete pain in terms of trying to stay warm without overheating, but it also made swinging the club near impossible - not a great combination if you wanted to enjoy your 18 holes.

Luckily, we've come a long way since then and we're now able to wear golf-specific garments which are not only comfortable, but also designed to keep your movement as natural as possible. So, instead of donning 5 or 6 layers during your round of golf, all you'll need is three.
