Welcome to this week’s newsletter. May I say what a difference a day makes to the weather. Today is a lovely autumn/early winter’s day, bright sunshine but a bit breezy and fresh. Yesterday was lovely and mild but very very wet and yesterday was the Beds and Cambs Pro Am. Looking at the weather forecast early in the week I thought I had picked a plumb tee time at 10am, it was to rain early doors then brighten up. I should have taken notice of the Lemons blog and the email correspondence that went with it as they cancelled their away day. We arrived to find the 18th with puddles on from first thing and the rain never relented. Actually that’s not true, I mistakenly took my umbrella down on the 12th for 5 minutes only for dusk to appear early, the horseman of the apocalypse arrived and with them a cloudburst. Obviously I got the blame for taking my umbrella down. Prior to the end of the world we were doing quite well. We managed to get to six under through ten as a team and I got to two under on my own card with no dramas despite the wet conditions. An hour or so later and after dropping several shots as the course became unplayable we had four less happy campers. On a number of greens there was nowhere to take relief from the lying water so you just had to whack it through the puddles. That said the team took it in good spirits and I would like to thank my synchronised swimming partners Alan Seymour (I'll let him tell the tale of his birdie on ten), Martin Meacher, who nearly accepted a call to go into work on the thirteenth rather than play golf anymore, and James Haupt. James has recently moved back to Saffron Walden after stints in South Africa and Dubai so was not really ready for the yesterday. His quote of the day was "the course has stood up to the conditions much better than I have" seemed to ring true for all of us. Anyway James, welcome back! Despite the conditions late on people as ever were full of praise for the course and the day that the club laid on. The team event was won on 85 points and the best pro score was 68 by Nicholas Cunningham who teed off early!
