Saffron Walden Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Mixed Open - 2015

Golf Club Attracts!

104 golfers from 32 Golf Clubs across the Home Counties made their way to Saffron Walden G.C. to play in the annual Mixed Open event.

Despite the cloudy and damp weather, play was enjoyed on a course living up to its recently judged position as the finest in the Cambridgeshire Golf Union.

The reputation of the Golf Club was further enhanced by the number of compliments received about the friendliness and care demonstrated by the staff and membership of the Club. The event organiser, Frank McDonald, said that the proven success of this annual event owed much to those involved at Saffron Walden G.C.

Club Captain Kieran O'Reilly, General Manager, Tom Munt, and Ladies Section Captain, Helen Porter, presented prizes to winners and runners-up.

The competition winners with a score of 39 points were Mr and Mrs Alex Greatwood from Ely City Golf Club. Second place was taken narrowly by Mr and Mrs M Copping of Upminster G.C. on 38 points. On the same score in third place were Mr and Mrs John Nixon representing Chelmsford Golf Club.

One point separated those in 4th, 5th and 6th places. From Colchester Mr John Redden and Mrs Pat Deman with 37 points secured fourth position with the same score being recorded by Thetford pair, Mr and Mrs Roger Setchell, in fifth place. Mr and Mrs Paul Williams, Braintree, occupied sixth place with 36 points.

Other prize winners were Sally Cade from Newton Green who was nearest the flag for the Ladies on the 18th hole. John Dornan, from Colchester was the nearest the flag winner for the Gents, also at the 18th hole.

An enjoyable day and Saffron Walden Golf Club looks forward to next year when we are expecting to see the return of a number of this year's visitors.

Walden close the gap

The sun came out, the wind dropped and Walden hit the inland links and beat St Ives 4-2 in the recent CAGU Div 1 league game. Mark Reeve and Olly Tuck demolished County A player Taylor and Stipson 4up. They were 1 down through 8 holes, but a 25ft birdie putt by Reeve on the 9th put them back in it. They went through the last 9 holes in 3 under par to seal a 4 up victory.

After overcoming traffic problems on the M11, Richard Southall and Cam Brown displayed their usual steadiness and won 4 up against Fleming and Priestley. In the final pairing Goodman and Macdonald took on Hosel and Kushank and lost heavily 7 down against a St Ives pairing who played consistent golf.

In the other fixture Ramsey beat Links 6-0.

The table after mid-season break is:

Brampton Pk 17
SWGC 15
Ramsey 14
Links 9
St Ives 5

Graham Goodman captain said:

"Another impressive performance by the famous 4 of Tuck, Reeve, Southall and Brown. This victory puts us right in the mix for the league. Availability will improve with the last part of the season, with the remaining fixtures 3 at home and one away at Links. We now have a break of two weeks in which the county championships are held at Walden and the team is up to try and qualify for the EGU champion club."

Congratulations On Another Team Victory

The ladies Jean Wilkinson Team produced 2 fine results over March at home on Friday, 22 May, and then Newmarket in the following match.

It was a fantastic result at march as all seven members of the Team won their match.

Well done Lynda Minton, representing Saffron Walden for the first time, Kiyoko McLellan, Vilma Krinks, Sue Gunter, Barbara Nicoll, Vivienne Dondi and Sue Ward. Thanks also to caddies and supporters Marjory Smith, Eileen Farrow, Sue Amiss, Linda Kelsey and Melissa Jones.

They then posted a good away result in their match against a strong Newmarket side. The team of Lynda Minton, Kiyoko McLellan, Vilma Krinks, Sue Gunter, Barbara Nicoll, Betty Williams and Vivienne Dondi played 7 singles matchplay games and won three matches, scoring a valuable six points.

The Division 2 league currently has Newmarket holding the lead with 36 points, with SW ladies second on 32 points with a game in hand.

The team's fighting spirit was given a great boost by the support from Ladies' Captain, Helen Porter and our reserves/caddies Elaine Purcell, Paula Munns, Eileen Farrow, Jaine Fieldhouse and Linda Kelsey.

The next match is on Thursday, 19 June against March (away).

We have had a fantastic response to the latest clothing ranges from Galvin Green, and it's great to see so many of you out on the course sporting their latest goods.

Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
