Greetings from Rob McNicholas | Saffron Walden Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional | Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.
It's been a busy week at the club especially with junior golf. As you will see later in the newsletter we were privileged to hold the Eastern County Girls championship, and despite the weather there was some fantastic golf played. As I write this there are the best junior golfers in CAGU on the course playing in our Junior Open and it's been a busy week finishing off the league calendar.
We have two junior teams this year in the Cambridgeshire leagues, our first team play in the top division whilst our development squad are in division 3. Going into the final game of the season our first team were top of the league, unfortunately they couldn't maintain this as they came up against a strong St. Neotts team. What this meant was that all three teams in the league had won both their home games and lost both their away game. So it went down to goal difference, which by our calculations meant we have finished second.
The B team/development squad was a much simpler affair to work out. The division that they are in consists of a Goggs B team then a Girton A team and Bourne A team. I'm pleased to say that they have walked the league which shows great promise for the next few years. It's a remarkable achievement considering in one of the matches, half the children involved were still at Primary school! Most of this squad is made up of the juniors who you will see on the range with Aaron and myself on a Saturday morning. I believe this shows, that with good backing from the club, we are heading in the right direction with the junior academy and long may this continue.
If you have a junior who wants to get into golf, come and have a chat with us in the pro shop, or click here to get in touch.
Some of you may still be waiting the results from last week's 4BBB challenge with the Captain and Pro. Part of this is Aaron and me trying to get used to the competitions system since Cam left, and the other reason is due to our poor back 9, with many a team beat us meaning the prize fund would be low, so I have decided to put up my own prize for first place.
We will then work the rest of it out from there.
Things were looking different half way round when we went out in a couple under, but only managing a par on 10 then bogeying 11 we were left chasing it. That's when disaster struck and Kieran unfortunately played the wrong ball on 12 and then we plodded in from there.
There was one fab four out there though with both teams scoring 45 points. The eventual winners on count back were Trevor Clarke and Mark Reeve. Mark continued his form the following day winning the Armitage Cup at Wanstead.
Saffron Walden Golf Club host East Region Girls Championships
The East Region Girls Championships have been held at Saffron Walden Golf Club. A prestigious event to be held at the club, which reinforces the clubs position as the no.1 golf club in the Eastern Region. The event is run by England Golf across the country and East region is open to players from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk.
The Girls Championships is a 36 hole scratch competition and a great field of competitors entered with handicaps from 1 to 20 as a maximum. As often happens the day was split by mixed weather conditions, morning sunshine saw competitors wearing t-shirts and shorts which turned to waterproofs and umbrellas in the afternoon to make the difficult course even more of a challenge. The turn out from club members to help and support was excellent, along with coaches and parents supporting the girls along.
The club put on a great day, the course, club facilities, catering and organiser/helpers were all very much appreciated by all and help make the event such a successful day.
The level of golf was fantastic, the scores reflect the quality of competitors with some great scores and golf to watch. Amelia & Ashley played incredibly well with under par scoring. We're sure many players will go onto play on the European Tour and we wish them continued success.

Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...

It's really positive that we're getting more of you to think harder about the ball you play; not just that, understanding the differences between models. A closer look at Srixon's Z-STAR shows it performs best with driver swing speeds betweeen 90 and 105mph. Why? Watch our video... |
