Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.
It's been a busy week at the club this week with plenty of play on the course and people testing out the dry but cold conditions.
Monday saw the first midweek stableford of the season which was won with 38 points by Joseph Imrie, which followed up his win the previous week in the seniors 4BBB with Nick Rouse. The scoring has been tricky all week as Monday proved for the men with only Joseph matching or bettering his handicap.
The same was true on Tuesday as the ladies played in their stableford which was won by Jaine Fieldhouse, showing that the pressures of office hasn't got to her yet.
Slade Meeting
On Wednesday it was the turn of the Slade for their March meeting. 19 players went out including a late guest appearance from Sarah. This was definitely a first for the Slade, and definitely the first time Dave Batt and Kieran O'Reilly have played in a swear free environment. In typical Slade fashion she met everyone in the bar pre game, and playing off the whites, silenced the usual hecklers by launching one over the hill on the first. Also like a true Slade member she 3 putted the last to make sure she didn't win.
The scoring on the day was pretty average with all groups finishing in the 30's. The winners were Simon Noakes, who has come to form after his warm winter training in South Africa, and Mick Dowling with 39 points.
Propping up the field with 31 points were our playing partners Wardy and Vic Power. Both had an off day particularly on the greens with a number of 3 and 4 putts. George Reynolds and myself never really gelled and we finished middle of the pack with four other groups.
Saffron Walden 3.5 - Gog Magog 1.5
SWGC scratch team defeated the men from The Gog Magog Hills in the latest of the pre-season friendlies at the Windmill Hill club last Sunday.
In glorious March sunshine, Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve went out against CAGU legends Dave Quinney and Steve Jarvis. The Walden boys raced to a 3 under score with Tuck holing his chip on the 2nd hole, and at one stage they were 5 up. The Gog's pairing fought back but Walden won 3 and 2.
Spencer Burlingham and Callum Brookes delivered 2 bogeys and 1 birdie to win 4 and 3.
Gog Magog fought back in the third game with England U16 international Ollie Rust and Chris O'Callaghan beating Adair and Brown 5 and 3.
Debutant Gary Bower and Ian Macdonald then halved their game.
In the final group Jacob Gamble and Graham Goodman were 3 up through 9 and a 4 iron pin high on the 18th sealed victory for the Walden junior and senior 2 up.
So Walden ran out winners by 3.5 to 1.5.
Sarah's update on her trip with Aaron to the Thetford Pro Am
In a very tight competition which saw 5 tied in first place with level par, Aaron and I both hit +4, so we were both pretty happy!
I missed out on the prizes by 1 as a team with 38 points too - Well Done to my partner Morag!
I felt like I played steady & started off with another eagle again on the par 5 6th by hitting a 5 iron to 3 feet!
Scoring could have gone a little better but the course was in great condition & the greens were remarkably hard with some tough pin positions on quick slopes at Thetford.
