Becky Brewerton Experience Day
Last Friday, we were kindly loaned Becky Brewerton for the day to give a short and long game clinic to the ladies section.
Despite the cold conditions there was a great turn out, and the positive response we had from the ladies speaks volumes about Becky.
She started out on the short game area demonstrating, before moving to the bunker and then the driving range.
All aspects of the clinic revolved round the same thing; don't try and help the ball up in the air, let the club do it for you, so much so that she was nailing drivers off the deck!

The demonstrations were followed by a 5 hole challenge match where Becky and Jaine Fieldhouse took on Morag and Sarah. The standard of the golf was brilliant, everyone hit good tee shots, Sarah even managing to out drive Becky by 10 yards. She then bettered this by knocking a wedge to 6 feet and holing the putt.
The second was also won with a birdie, this time by Jaine as she hit a smashing drive down the middle, then hit a lovely second shot into the green before holing out from 8 feet for a three.
The third was won by a good up and down from Becky before she and Morag shared the 4th in pars.
Becky sealed the win with a 25ft birdie on five to clinch the challenge.
What impressed me whilst watching her play was not just the ball striking, but how every putt she had on the five holes either dropped or scared the hole. As we all know when playing out course for the first time, this is not that easy to do. She used the AimPoint technique, and she looked like she fancied holing everything.
A big thank you to Yonex for arranging the day, for Sarah, Morag and Jaine for taking part in the game, for Viv after I picked on her to have a go after Becky's demonstration and hitting two perfect 7 irons, and to Becky for giving up her time to come to do the day.
She proved that even tour players who have won tour events, won the order of merit title and played in Solheim Cups, keep it nice and simple and don't complicate things when they get out there.
It's always good to hear about what our members are up to, and this week I received an email from Sue Funston who, our on her travels, bumped into a familiar face:
"Hi Rob,
Thought you might like this photo of Colin and I with Sangdao at her restaurant in Phuket.
She is looking forward to golf back in Saffron Walden, meanwhile we had a wonderful meal with her on Saturday and she would love to see any other members if they are visiting Phuket!
Sue"
