Injured foot kicks Walden on to victory
SWGC scratch team were dealt a blow on the day of their difficult match away at Brampton Pk last Tuesday in the CAGU Division 1 scratch league.
Walden star Ryan Adair injured his foot, so Captain Graham Goodman had to call up Spencer Burlingham on the morning of the match. Goodman has had to reshuffle his pack twice in three weeks, but he sure dealt two winning hands.
Ian Macdonald and Spencer "the ever up for a challenge" Burlingham set about one of CAGU's top pairings in Reeson and Loveday. The Walden pairing were 2 up early on, but eventually succumbed to Brampton's golf and lost 4 down.
Richard Southall and Callum Brookes then played blistering golf against Davies and Burns. They notched up 4 birdies and were 2 under when they finished and won 3up. This was a high quality game driven on by Brookes' putting, holing three putts of 20ft, 6ft and 15 foot, and Southall's precision iron play.
In what was another memorable performance Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve slotted home 5 birdies and won 8 up against King and Morely
Graham Goodman captain said: "Well there is never a dull moment in this scratch season with injuries, and tonight with the match maybe being abandoned or not, with powerful lightning around. This WAS a powerful performance with Olly, Mark, Richard and Callum playing probably their best golf of the season. Ian and Spencer showed their fighting spirit in battling hard against Brampton's top pairing".

Saffron Walden Ladies start defence of their title with superb win
After winning the Jean Wilkinson County Trophy last year, Saffron Walden ladies got off to a great start this season by winning their opening match in the group stages against Newmarket.
Playing at home, the 2 opening matches pressed home their advantage, with both Lynda Minton and Kiyoko McLellan winning 4 up with 3 to go. Sue Gunter and Sue Ward won by even greater margins, 6 up with 5 to go.
Others had to fight to the bitter end with Carol Jones winning by 1 hole, Betty Williams earning a draw. Barbara Nicoll found herself 3 down, fought back to be all square, only to drop 3 holes for a second time. However she fought back strongly to secure a well-earned draw. The 12-2 point victory gives the team a flying start in the competition.
