David Watts Away Day
The annual David Watts away day took place a couple of weeks ago in the glorious week of summer sunshine we had. The day was as ever well attended with 40 players and well organised by Simon Noakes.
The course was set up beautifully with straight hitting been rewarded which meant the scoring was unusually low. John Carpenter and I managed a credible 37 points which earned us 3rd place and a bottle of wine. The winners though were Colin McDonald and Mike Gebbie who obviously found the going easier than most.
Magical Brookes turns it on in Walden win Le Crunch match happened at Windmill Hill last Wednesday, in the CAGU Division 1 match vs Ramsey for the Walden boys.
The threat of thunder did not materialise and the sun came out on Captain Goodman who again reversed the order to counteract the threat posed by fellow title challengers Ramsey.
In the opening game
Ryan Adair and
Spencer Burlingham took on
Hollands and
Debenham-Scott. Walden fell behind early on, visiting places they do not normally swing. They were 3 down coming into the 16th hole, but staged a mini recovery and won the 16th and 17th holes. A par by both sides pushed the Ramsey pairing into a 1 hole victory.
In the next group and bouncing along the fairways to the sounds of the 90's,
Olly Tuck and
Ian Macdonald set about
Arthur and
Wright. A birdie blitz echoed around Windmill Hill and they won on the 11th hole. Say no more - they eventually finished winners 6up.
Taking on Ramsey's top pairing of
Hodgkin and
Gear, the inform
Callum Brookes and
Richard Southall produced magical golf in the setting sun. Walden fell 2 down through 4, but then the magic started from Walden. In some magical spell which should only be seen on the European tour, they were 6 under through 7 holes and eventually ran out winners 3 up. This was a high quality game which meant Walden won the match 4-2.
Graham Goodman said:
"I can't ask any more of the boys tonight- aggressive magical golf by the two winning pairings. Another important game follows in 2 weeks so there is no let up in focus against St Neots away with two matches to go. A special mention tonight must go to our vice-captain Gary Bonner and Jane Fieldhouse ladies captain and Justine Voss in pushing the boys on." Ladies Get Into Golf with PGA Pro Sarah
The 3rd year of the ladies get into golf programme has been a huge success. Over 7 weeks we have had 45 ladies take part in learning golf, some who may have never picked up a golf club before to others who are getting back into the game.
Rob, Aaron and I taught the basics on the range to coaching short game, bunkers and putting - enough for every lady to have the confidence to get out on a golf course. On the final week we joined the 3 groups together and went out on the course. With the help from
Jaine, Melissa, La-Vern &
Graham, the ladies could put into practice what they had learnt over 4 holes. The weather stayed sunny for us and all the ladies enjoyed the experience of being out on the course.
Going forwards from here, all the ladies have been encouraged to continue playing and have also been invited to play at Chesterford Research Park par 3 course for an in-between step to continuing their golf at Saffron Walden. There will also be refresher courses to take part in at SW Golf Club during August, September & October (dates are to follow).
