Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter,
The weather continues to be on our side and this is reflected in the numbers still playing on the course.
I had my chance to get out and play on Tuesday in the second Lady Captain and Pro challenge. Last year Helen and I managed to beat the whole field and the ladies were obviously keen to rectify this even giving themselves full handicap.
Jaine and I got off to a good start as she chipped on for a birdie on two, nett birdied three and I birdied five and six. We also left chances out on one, four and seven so could quite easily been -7 though seven.
We were made to pay for this over the next few holes as the rain came in and the wind picked up, we dropped one on eight and failed to take good chances on nine and ten. I managed to get a birdie on eleven but this proved to be our last three pointer and we gave two further shots back.
We came in with a credible 38points and only one team managed to beat us, Jo Kurchiss and Sonia Penney who scored an excellent 42 points. It was nice to see two relatively new members get into the prizes, I know since they've joined they've, had lessons, put the practice in and can normally be seen coming off the course early in the morning when most are starting, so congratulations to them.
Thanks also to Jaine, Ginny and Fiona for a nice game on Tuesday and well done to Jaine for getting down to a handicap of 10 in her captains year and been selected for the county b's.
Burlington and Voss produce a storming finish to win the Gatward Cup
Sunday saw the grand finale to the mixed golf season at Saffron Walden Golf Club. As is traditional, mixed pairs compete in either the Men or Lady Captains' team for the Sheila Rand Trophy.
This year 28 pairs took part, the sun shone, the course was in great condition, and the trophy was won by Men's Captain Chris Porter by the narrow margin of 9 points.
Alongside the team competition the prestigious Gatward Cup is also at stake.
Spencer Burlington and Justine Voss with only 4 strokes had a fantastic round, winning on countback from David Batt and Susan Amiss, who also played amazing golf. Both pairs had 39 points, but Burlington and Voss's back 9 of 21 points, a gross 35, 1 under par, sealed their victory.
As Voss said: "it was one of those days when we got it all together". |

Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
