Sarah Smith - Women & Golf Magazine

Click here to view Sarah's second coaching video from the Women & Golf magazine...don't forget to have a look at April's issue of the magazine for the first Coaching article!

Many lady golfers struggle with distance on their iron shots. Sarah explains how you can gain more yards.

Junior golf

James, the Saffron Walden Master's Champion

Saffron Walden Juniors competed in their own Master's tournament at the weekend, combining their own score with that of one of the top golfers at Augusta. James Hamilton, aged 15, had, however no need of the help of Charley Hoffman (72) as he carded an oustanding nett 65, 7 under his handicap.

James has only taken up golf in the last 2 years and is making remarkable progress, and will see a further substantial cut to his handicap of 21. He played steadily, with a string of pars, and could have finished with a lower score if, on the par 3 18th hole, his tee shot hadn't found the bunker resulting in a double bogey. James said he had felt relaxed, concentrated well, and been unaware how well he had scored until he added up his card at the end of the round.

The runner up was Louis Martin, nett 71, which, combined with Duffner's 70, gave him 141. In a seperate 9 hole competition Jack Sparrow was the winner, finishing with a nett 38 to add to Rory McIlroy's 71, giving him an overall 109.

Nine Hole Competition:
The nine hole competition was won by Jack Sparrow (23 shots) with a nett 38, added to his drawn partner Rory McIlroy with a 71 for a total 109.

Juniors vs Stortford

The star of the show was Ollie Allen who, playing on his own won against a Stortford pair who, in Greensomes, had the advantage of choosing their preferred tee shot. One up.

We lost the second match, then halved the third, following a brilliant come back from Stortford who had been three down.

Unfortunatley, we also lost the last match to.

A great effort by the team though and there are some stars in the making. Jack and Toby are going to be tough to beat in the future.

Club News
Two common faults I often see with a driver set up when teaching are; weight too left sided , and open shoulder alignment. These are both caused by the alteration with the ball position for the driver. As it's moved left in the stance for a right handed player, the weight tends to go with it, and the shoulders open at the same time.Read more...
