Hello and welcome to this week’s newsletter. As you will see from Sarah's report, despite Aaron and my best efforts she found the bomb we planted at Prince's a month ago as a penalty for missing the fairway, you will also see how she tried to escape one of their fearsome bunkers. Just as the season appears to be getting going we are due for another weather hit, hopefully it won't be as bad as the previous one. You will see from the poster below that we are running the ladies get into golf session for the 5th year running. This has proved very popular and we have taught over 100 ladies in this time, some who had never given it a go before, others who had dabbled a bit and now had more time to try properly and others who were getting back into it. Whatever level the ladies are starting from, if you know anyone who would be interested then please get back in touch, if the dates are oversubscribed then we will put an extra evening on as well. At the end of their 7 week course we will finish off at the Chesterford Science Park course to put all that they've learned into practice. They will also be able to continue playing at the Science Park over the summer to continue their progress. |
Trip to Prince's - Sarah Smith
Wednesday & Thursday this week I took the Ladies Squads to Prince’s Golf Club on an away couple of days. We had a very exciting and interesting trip as well as being very lucky with the weather. |
Day 1 started with arriving, great breakfast, heading down to the Golf Course from the lodges to find a Bomb Disposal Army Truck. After Charlotte asking what it was all about and being told, 'it's normal for us' - we got on with the warm up and short game coaching as planned. Once gathered by the tee for our first group to head off, myself & Charlotte, the Professional came running over to stop us from going as they had found 3 WW1 bombs which needed to be blown up! Heading back in the clubhouse for an hours delay, I offered more coaching and unlimited cups of tea were drunk, also hearing that a 4th bomb had been found and blown up. We eventually got out in the sunshine playing an individual stableford and great fun was had. Well done to 1st place winner Yvonne Jardine and 2nd place Charlotte Pienaar. |
Day 2 we woke up to a lot of wind and rain, completely different to Wednesday’s weather, shortly after breakfast we headed to the club for a quick warm up and an early tee off. We played 4BBB Beat the Pro & Lady Captain and by the time we got to the 3rd, although still windy, the rain had blown over. Justine and I scored 41 points, after a great chip in on the 18th from Justine for 4 points! Well done to all the competition winners. |
Big thank you to Viv Dondi for helping organise the trip and all the ladies who came along - we had a great time. I'm very much looking forwards to going back again in April with some other ladies from the Squads to Prince’s Golf Club's great hospitality - hopefully no more bombs to be found this time!

Seniors Match Report
Match Report of the Seniors Match v Haverhill at home on Wednesday the 7th prepared by Match Captain Roger Cowen. I was in an optimistic mood whistling the third movement to Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor while driving to our first home match of the season against Haverhill. I had studied the Guidance for Match Captains (this was later disputed) and having assembled a team of considerable skill and talent the world felt like an oyster. At three minutes before our meeting time of 8 o’clock we were informed by Rob McNicholas that a member of the team wasn’t well and wouldn’t be playing. Before the expletive panic in my brain had subsided Bill Sanford was up and gone and could be seen in a buggy racing up the first faster than Lewis Hamilton racing towards the first corner of the Nürburgring. Luckily our first reserve Tony Collett was on the course and kindly agreed to be come and join the team. Thank you Tony. At ten past eight my concerns were hitting peak velocity as we were still two members short of a full team with the start of the match scheduled for 08:28. We managed to secure two people from the changing room on standby who in the end were not needed as by quarter past eight the whole team was now in place. I could see people looking at their watches so instead of keeping my welcome speech brief I wandered off piste talking about how different regional accents pronounced Haverhill, not a good idea. Apparently it also depends on which side of Haverhill you come from as well. I was reminded to introduce individual members of each group to one another as I had forgotten to take notice of the Match Captains Guidance I had diligently studied. I was often accused as a child of having a brain like a sieve and being reminded frequently that if my head wasn’t screwed on I would forget that as well. Life was tough! Tee time was getting very close, the first group just making it for the 08:28 start. A brilliant feature of this seasons score cards, magnificently produced by Ian Hassall, was the inclusion of an expected finish time, four hours hence. This brilliant feature proved to be very worthwhile as no group to my knowledge came in more than five minutes over their time, a wonderful achievement.

We won the match by seven games to one with no reported incidents on the course. I must thank Eric Grant the Scottish accountant and my wingman for dealing with the money and reminding me of a few more things I was forgetting to do on the day. Eric also won nearest the pin on the 5th. I am reminded of the Italian writer Italo Svevo’s quote “There are three things I always forget. Names, faces and - the third I can’t remember.” It was a fantastic start to the season and a team of outstanding ability, charm, good looks, wit, and a friendly demeanour produced an outstanding result. Well done everybody.

The reason we’re asking you to do this is so that we can start sending you personalised content that is more relevant to your golfing needs. Likewise, if you’re a gentleman off 12, we will begin sending you content that will help you to get your handicap down to the holy grail of single-figure digits. Thank you to everyone who has already completed their profile and for those of you who haven’t been able to as of yet, please try and do so in the near future. |
