Seniors Match Report On a gloriously sunny Thursday 28th June, the seniors hosted the Braintree team for their annual match. By 7:50am, all sixteen of the Braintree team were pacing up and down in the clubhouse, raring to go. Most sported handicaps indicating they might be Proper Golfers. Just four of the Walden team were present. The match captain considered pulling a sickie.
Then things got better. Over the next ten minutes the rest of the Walden team streamed in, pumped up and ready for action. The lead match of Chris Martin and Derek Green got off to a cracking start, with Derek putting in from off the green to win the first. Chris hit a chip dead on the fourth to put Walden three up. Then it got a lot more difficult. Braintree parred 7 through 9 to level the match at the turn. A birdie from Derek on the 14th and an almost par from Chris on the 17th put Walden one up with one to play but they couldn’t equal Braintree’s par on the last. The match ended in an honourable half. Behind them, the other Walden teams were showing their class (and using their shots well). Saffron Walden ran out clear winners by six and a half to one and a half. A successful day was rounded off by a superb lunch of chicken cacciatore and bread and butter pudding. Well done to the catering staff. Everyone contributed to the result but there are special mentions to Anthony Gold for nearest the pin on the 18th; Ray Jenkyn of Braintree for nearest the pin on the 5th; Keith Peacock and Tony Collett for winning their game by a dog licence; and last but not least, Bill Hall and Eric Grant who both birdied the 15th. The seniors look forward to defending their record on August 10th in the return match at Braintree. Report by Match Captain, Chris Martin.
