Welcome to this week’s newsletter. As you will see the flagship events happened over the weekend.
Congratulation to the winners; Richard for a remarkable turnaround in the second round and just pipping Tucky, Spencer for playing some consistent golf all weekend and Justine for winning the ladies battle over Jaine. Katie Stevens stole the show and continued her good form in the ladies nett with two great scores and Sue Bowler played some fine golf on Tuesday to collect the ladies seniors championship. Also a special mention to Kevin Hayes who has had a terrible time with injury over the past year. Great to see you back playing and playing well to win the seniors. |
Lombard Regional Final Yesterday Jonny Jenkins and I played in the regional final of the Lombard Trophy at Sandy Lodge, or Sandy Way as the PGA official announced it. For those who have not played there it’s definitely worth a visit. It sits just inside the Moor Park estate and plays like an inland links. The greens were fast and some fairways even faster.

Playing in these events are always slow and it took us just over two and a half hours to play nine holes in hot temperatures. We wilted on the back nine and finished off shooting a 70 with numerous putts not dropping and a couple of unforced errors. Normally in this event six to eight under gets you in. Not yesterday, as one group shot a 58! No matter how we moaned about chances missed there was no way we were going to shoot a 58. Apparently the amateur of that group had a nett hole in one on the seventh and a real hole in one on the eighth which certainly tidies up your front nine. They ended up winning by four shots and a nice trip to Portugal as a result. |

Thanks to Jonny for his company yesterday, for a brief spell we would have been the hottest group on the course with our start, he just needs to practice slam dunking them on par threes for us to have a chance next year! |
Ladies British Open Qualifier – Sarah Smith After an exciting weekend watching & supporting club championships, Monday this week I played in the Ladies British Open Pre-Qualifier at Hankley Common Golf Course. Another lovely day weather wise meant the course played extremely dry and bouncey! A lot of straight shots were needed and I was pretty happy with the amount of fairways & greens I hit throughout the game. The course was in great condition and I was very happy to score +7 from the men’s white tees (a long way back!!), missing the cut by just 5 shots. Definitely an improvement from last year’s score! |
|
My next tournament is another one day series at Chestfeild on Friday which I’m looking forward to. I’ll then be accompanying Janina Jones to Dunham Forest Golf Club on Monday where we team up to take part in the Ladies Lombard Trophy! A big thank you for all the support I have through my tournaments, especially to my sponsors CF Corporate. Saffron Walden lose return match against St Neots Saffron Walden lost to St Neots in their Scratch League match this past Tuesday. On a hot summer evening Saffron Walden team took on St Neots away in the return leg of the Scratch league. The first pairing of Burlingham and Martin took on Loveday and Meeds. The St Neots pairing were far too strong for Burlingham and Martin, taking an early lead which they never relinquished. Burlingham and Martin, despite their best efforts, could not find their previous form and lost the match 7&6. In the second match, Nuthall and Chapman took on Waywood and Northfield. The match was iniatially a tight one, with both teams taking the lead over the first 9 holes, however Waywood and Northfield stayed tough with several birdies to take out the match 3&2. In the final match, Goodman and King took on Brister and Heir. The Walden pair were solid throughout the match, however the home advantage eventually took its toll leading to a 3&2 victory by St Neots. |
All in all a disappointing result for Walden leading to their first whitewash loss of the season.
Foursomes Results - Martin and Burlingham lost against Loveday and Meeds 7&6 - Chapman and Nuthall lost against Waywood and Northfield 3&2 - Goodman and King lost to Brister and Heir 3&2 Overall Result - St Neots 6 SWGC 0 |

Missed putt hands Southall the Championship There was a thrilling finish to the men's club championship at Saffron Walden Golf Club as it all came down to the final putt. At the end of the first round on Saturday Olly Tuck was in the lead at 2 over par, with Richard Southall 6 shots behind, having shot a disappointing 80, 8 over par. On the Sunday, Southall returned with a point to prove; he turned his game round and turned in a gross 70, 2 under par. Playing in the 4th to last group, he then had a tantalising wait in the club house as the first day leaders approached the 18th tee. When the many supporters heard that Tuck needed a birdie for an outright win, or a par to force a play off, the tension was palpable. Tuck's tee shot just overshot the green, a short chip and missed putt handed the championship to a delighted Southall. Runner up was Spencer Burlingham, who just pipped Tuck on countback Burlingham carried off the Summer Cup for the best nett score of the Championship with a nett 143. The ladies championship also produced a very competitive battle between the current captain Justine Voss and Jaine Fieldhouse. After the first day, Voss was 2 ahead of Fieldhouse, gross 84 to 86. Playing together on the Sunday, the two were neck and neck as Fieldhouse birdied the 5th to close the gap to one shot. On the par 4 16th, Voss parred the hole, and Fieldhouse saw a putt slide by to leave her with a 6. It was now too late to make up the shots lost, and with both parring the 18th, Voss retained the championship she won last year. |
A highlight of the championship was the fantastic performance of Katy Stevens, in her last year as a Junior. Starting on the Saturday with a handicap of 27, she shot 2 rounds of 69 nett. After a shaky start, she found her length and direction, finding the green on the par 5 10th hole in 2. She carried off the Betty Thompson Trophy for the best nett score and the Bronze Trophy for the best gross score for ladies with handicaps of 21 and above. Kevin Hayes was a delighted winner of the Seniors Championship for the first time, playing one under his handicap to end with a gross 76. John Roberts was runner up with 77. It was great to see several of you asking about Motocaddy’s new M-Series range of electric trolleys following last week’s newsletter. However, we know that electric trolleys aren’t for everyone, so make sure you take a look at Motocaddy’s push options too, which also feature some fantastic technology. |
Small and mighty This new Motocaddy CUBE CONNECT push trolley isn’t electric, but it has many of the same benefits as Motocaddy’s flagship models, including a soft-touch handle, Quikfold frame and Easilock base. Most impressive however, is that it provides yardages to the front, middle and back of every green, making it the world's only GPS enabled push trolley. If all that’s not enough, you’ll also enjoy generous storage space, including an under-handle net and accessory compartment. This is just one of the trolley options we offer, so if you’re looking for something with more features or that folds smaller, why not pop by the store and check out our whole range? |
