Hello Golfers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. Rob's away in Cornwall this week on holiday so we've been left to man the shop & what a busy week it's been too...

Monday started with the Seniors Stableford, Tuesday Ladies Medal, Wednesday Stableford, Thursday County Vets Championships and the weekend brings two trophy comps!

With the weekend’s competitions coming up, we are also running a Pro Shop Special to find a winner for the Limited Edition Titleist Tour Bag you may have seen in the shop. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is buy a sleeve of Pro V1, Pro V1x or the new Titleist AVX Golf Balls OR buy a square from the grid for £10. The draw will be done shortly after the weekend.

Junior golf

GolfSixes

A huge well done to our Junior GolfSixes team last Sunday in there game at Bourn Golf Club, the weather was very different from the last match.

We came 3rd!!

The scores were close again but they’re all set for the next game this weekend, on the hills at Royston Golf Club!

Our next game is this Sunday at Bourn Golf Club. Good Luck to the 6 Juniors playing and look out for the update in next week’s newsletter.

Saffron Walden Pro Am

Last Friday saw the annual Saffron Walden Pro Am. It was great to see the sun still shining for the day (unlike this week’s weather!) - Here are the results:

Seniors section

Seniors Match

Thursday 2nd August the SWGC Seniors was captained by Eric Grant at home against Bishops Stortford and SWGC were victorious again! A complete reversal of the Away Match result.

Notable wins from Keith Peacock and John Stewart 5 4 and of course the needle match Keiran O'Reilly and Chris Porter won 4&2 over Peter O'Reilly and Gordon Heggie.

The overall result was 5 and a half to 2 and a half.

An enjoyable time was had by all with a lot of complimentary comments from the opposition relating to course food hospitably etc.

The Nearest the Pin for Bishops Stortford on the 5th was won by Roger Doughty. This is the last occasion he will be organising this match and many others as he “retiring” from this role at the end of the year.

The Nearest the Pin for SWGC winner bizarrely was won by Chris Martin whose tee shot destined to go through the back of the green hit the Nearest the Pin marker (with my name on it) resulting in the ball stopping 18 inches from the flag! Chris without any embarrassment or conscience duly accepted the bottle of wine.

Seniors Stableford

On Monday 6th of August still in the "heat wave" 35 seniors entered the Stableford Competition. This event was won by Bill Hall who returned an excellent 37 points. He was followed by Nick Rouse, Gareth Williams and David Wiseman all on 36.

The Course was again in amazing condition given that it had just had the major Pro Am on Friday. Well done to our Green Staff again.

Groovy

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.

Why do grooves matter?
The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge.

What causes wear?
All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this.

Need to upgrade?
Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial.
