Welcome to this week’s newsletter. |
Autumn Cup victory caps an outstanding year for promising junior Alex What a fantastic year 2018 has been for 12 year old Alex Sparrow as she edges ever closer to her dream of playing in the Solheim Cup and being part of Team GB in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Alex started the year with a handicap of 21, and has already dropped to 9.5; this means she can look forward to competing in regional and national junior girls’ tournaments in 2019. Thanks to the support of Saffron Walden Golf Club and her mentor Justine Voss, Alex has gained invaluable match experience, playing in the ladies team in the Cambs and Hunts Jean Wilkinson Trophy and progressing to the scratch team. Selected to play for the County Junior Girls, she became the highest points scorer, winning 3 out of her 4 matches. |

In club junior competitions, Alex has carried off the Sellers Putter, the Betty Pedler Cup, the Easter Trophy and, in the Junior Championship, the nett prize. In the last week Alex entered the toughest endurance ladies competition at the club, the Autumn Cup, competing in 36 holes of medal play in a day. Her second round nett 71 was too good for the rest of the field, and lead to her handicap being cut by two strokes. Competing in the Cambs and Hunts Junior Championships, Alex won the Girls Nett Trophy. Alex’s dedication to golf is only possible because of the support of her teachers and friends at Saffron Walden County High. During term time Alex dedicates her weekends to training and playing golf, and finds time after school to practice and play friendly golf. Her determination to succeed leads her to ensure that, if a golf competition means she misses school, she has covered her work in advance. Watch out for Saffron Walden Golf Club's rising star in the future... |

SWGC ladies scratch team promoted In their final match of the season the Saffron Walden ladies scratch team comfortably won all three matches playing away at Royston to win promotion to Division One of the Cambs and Hunts Scratch League for next year. Justine Voss, 5 up with 4 to play, Lynda Minton 5 and 3 and Jaine Fieldhouse 7 and 6 triumphed despite the pouring rain. The team, which includes Angela Reed and Alex Sparrow, won 19 out of a possible 24 points this year; an outstanding result as they were only promoted to Division Two last year. Playing home and away, the Saffron Walden ladies claimed 9 points to 3 against Royston and 10 points to 2 against Ramsey.

Seniors' Match Report On Thursday, 23 August Saffron Walden Seniors, with Peter Still as Match Captain arrived at Bourn having previously won at home, but Bourn had their team on warning a 6 - 2 win was required. Saffron were up for the challenge however. A big win 5 and 4 from Anthony Gold and Chris Knight followed by 2 up from Geoff Tobin and Christopher Joubert was excellent, but in the end whilst we just fell short on the day 4 and half to 3 and half over the two matches we had our noses ahead 9 to 7.
A big thank you to Denis Brown for coming in as our reserve and we hope Mike Bassett enjoyed his first match with the team. Big win for County at Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden Golf Club were the hosts, for the recent County match between Cambridgeshire Seniors and Warwickshire Seniors. CAGU had not beaten Warwickshire for a number of years, but this all changed for Graham Goodman’s Senior boys. In the morning greensomes the score was 3-3, with Goodman and his partner John Yuill form Links GC halving their match. Kevin Hayes and his partner Ian Robinson from Brampton Park lost 3 and 2, but only after the visitors were 3 under par. In the afternoon CAGU played some breathtaking golf, running out winners 12-0 with a overall score CAGU 15 Warwickshire 3. Goodman and Yuill won 3 and 2 with both players on form. Hayes proved the steadying ship as Robinson was 5 under par and this led them to a 6 and 5 victory. Saffron Walden gained great plaudits from the counties with impressive hospitality and the best greens that the counties have played on this year.

Goddard Cup Final The club have made it to the Final of The Goddard Cup Club Team Scratch Match Play Knockout Competition, and will be playing at Saffron Walden on Sunday 9th September. The trophy was presented in 2005 by Saffron Walden Golf Club member John Goddard, and is played over 36 holes, 18 holes foursomes in the morning, teeing off at 9:30am followed by 18 holes of singles at 1:30pm. The team would love your support on the day.
County Open
The club hosted the County Open last Sunday. Congratulations to Richard Beadles of Royal Worlington who won the day with a total of -3. A thank you must go to Fabian who represented us from the Pro Shop and getting wet through in the process due to the weekends inclement conditions. You won't get this when you go back to Perth, WA, and this is what you get for beating your boss in the Pro-Am! The club also recieved many positive comments about the course and its conditions despite the weather. |
9 days to go... With just nine days to go before the Great North Run, the countdown is on and the run is fast approaching. I’ve been reading article after article trying to take on all the advice and although I’m not practicing running a whole half marathon, the training is coming along well. One of the quotes I loved from an article I read was, ‘set a goal that scares you a little, but excites you a lot!’ This is definatley how I’m feeling right now! We are on £900 of our £1000 target, if you haven’t sponsored us already, but would like to do so, please follow this link - www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sarah-chris1215. If you didn’t get to read my story last week, here’s why I’ve decided to take part in such a prestigious event. |
Setting myself a challenge... Although I love my job as a Golf Professional, seeing clients improve their game and improving their handicap is definitely the best part. Similar to golf, sometimes you have to think about pushing yourself to your best achievements - this is one reason why, in just 9 days, I'm going to be taking part in the Great North Run! Since completing my level two disability course, I have been working alongside Paul from Battleback Golf. Paul is an ex-serviceman who after losing his lower right leg, has taken up golf in the last few years to help with his recovery. His golf has come on no-end and he loves every minute of being on the course! With this in mind, we have decided that all the money sponsored for the Great North Run will go to the charity Blesma. I'll be running with my partner Chris, who comes from an armed forces background, this was another great reason to choose this charity. Blesma are the a charity who are dedicated to assisting serving and ex-service men and women who have suffered life-changing limbloss or the use of a limb, an eye or sight. Blesma provides a network where members not only enjoy support from our professional Welfare Team, but where they have the opportunity to engage with others who have similar injuries and backgrounds to themselves, building an important fellowship with each other to overcome everyday battles. All the funds raised with be going specifically to Blesma’s Golf Team as golf is a great way of recovering both physically and mentally.

The proposed changes to the Rules of Golf are less than six months away, so we thought we’d take a look at one introduction that you may not have been aware of... |
Under the current Rules of Golf, if you strike the ball more than once in the course of a stroke (i.e. a double hit), you take a one-stroke penalty in addition to the stroke that was made. However, under the proposed changes, if you accidentally hit the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, there is no penalty (new Rule 10.1a). This is because the R&A thought it was unfair and unnecessary to penalise a player for an accidental strike. All in all, a sensible amendment to the current Rules of Golf in our opinion. Let us know your thoughts. |
