Welcome to this week’s newsletter. This week saw Graham Jones and myself in two captain pro challenges, one against the club and one against other Captains and Pro’s from across the Midlands and the East of England. And, what a tale of two halves we had.
On Saturday we had an eventful game where to say the least we didn't dove tail very well. We actually had seven three pointers but gave most of them back. I'm blaming the greens, with the exception of the twelfth where I made a very unlikely birdie, I holed nothing. Obviously the team of Price and Plumb found the development green works to the liking of their strokes and came in with 44 points. Contrast that to yesterday where we played at East Herts in the East Region Qualifier. We had the pleasure of playing with the home Pro and his Captain Micheal Benjamin, dad of our very own Josh who plays here. I said to Graham that if we could beat them by a point then we won't be far off. Well we beat them by three! |
This included a fantastic hole in one by Graham on the 7th, a 192 yard par 3 uphill. The flag was not easy to get at, tucked in left on top of a ridge but Graham struck a beautiful 3 wood, as soon as it was on the green Danny the home Pro called that it would go in, and as you can see from the video he was right. This was Graham's first entry on the scorecard, a one nett zero for five points.

We went out in twenty one points and came back in nineteen in tricky conditions. Again we left a number of shots out there, when we got in to our frustration we were lying second, trailing by two points. This team were eventually disqualified so we rose to first but a few teams in the afternoon came in to knock us back to eighth out of fifty four. Thanks to Graham for an enjoyable week’s golf, maybe if we had another game lined up we would get into the mid-forty points wise and congratulations on your hole in one.

GolfSixes Finish! After a lot of very close GolfSixes matches played at Kingsway, Bourn, Royston and the final two matches held at Saffron Walden the results were all down to the last game on Sunday 16th September. The Golf Foundation organise & support the GolfSixes League to encourage younger members or those involved in regular coaching within the club, who are just looking to get their first handicaps to play in a team of 6, completing 6 holes for points! The Texas Scramble in a pairs format makes the holes quick and easy as well as encouraging the pair to talk their way down to getting the ball in the hole! It’s easy scoring method of maximum of 10 shorts per hole, worth 1 points and a hole in 1 worth 10 points. The 6 holes are started from the 100-150 yard markers, brilliant for Saffron Walden as we are just opening our blue tees.

Seniors Match vs Haverhill On Friday 7th of September Senior Captain Bill Standford led a Team of Seniors to play Haverhill away. Although the Seniors have a 100% home record (14 straight wins) our away record doesn't bear comparison with only 2 drawn matches to show for our efforts. Haverhill away was our penultimate chance to record an away win. The course is a mixture of old and new - whereas the newest part of the course is relatively open and straight forward, the old part is tight, has lots of water and some severe dog-legs that need careful play off the tee. Local knowledge counts heavily. By the time 4 matches had been completed, 3 of them defeats, things were already looking grim. We did better in the final 4 matches but not well enough to avoid a 5-3 defeat. Our only consolation was an excellent lunch and the knowledge that we had already beaten Haverhill 7-1 at home.

Gear up like Team Europe As all eyes turn to next week's Ryder Cup, we thought we'd highlight a special partnership that you might not be aware of. It's pretty safe to say the players will be wrapping up warm when they take to the course in Paris, and one brand that the European Team will be wearing is Galvin Green, their official supplier of weatherwear for this year's event.
We stock an extensive range in-store so if you like the look of what you see next week, be sure to pop in to take a look.

With the Ryder Cup coming up next week, we can expect plenty of tense moments, particularly on the greens. You’ll probably notice that players on both sides will have the ability to hole out under huge amounts of pressure – who can forget Ian Poulter’s clutch putt on the 16th green at Medinah in 2012? |
Find a putter you can trust To replicate these kind of putts, whether that's in the monthly medal or playing for money with your friends, you need to choose a flatstick you can trust. Why not try out one of Scotty Cameron’s Futura putters? The current range involves several high-MOI mallets with tour-proven shapes, as well as improved alignment features and feel. Some of the best players in the world, such as Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, have Scotty putters in the bag, so you can be sure you’ll be in good company. |
