Welcome to this week’s newsletter, hopefully you all enjoyed the brief snow that we had last week and are looking forward to getting out on the course this week to play. Hats off to the green staff who managed to get a make shift 9 hole course laid out last Saturday and incredibly 18 holes open Sunday with only 5 temps. |
Talk about what a difference a few days make, by Wednesday I was at Hunstanton with Ben, Andrew Woosey and Ed Welch playing in glorious sunshine with hardly a breath of wind. For those who have played Hunstanton before, you know that slow play is never an issue and we managed to play 36 holes foursomes with a spot of lunch, teeing off at 10 and finished by 3.50. Links golf doesn’t get any better on days like that where the course is fairly defenseless, although there's certain holes there where that’s never the case.
We had a good match with Ben and Ed sneaking the morning session and Andrew and myself winning in the afternoon. Thanks guys for the invite, hope to do it again soon. |

Speaking of foursomes I'm delighted to tell you that Sarah and me have got into Sunningdale again this year and so has Ben and his playing partner Nathan Day who plays at The Millbrook. The tournament begins on 12th March and hopefully you won't see a lot of us that week! |
Sarah Smith - Thetford Pro Am Thursday this week I played in Thetford Pro Am winter series, alongside both Professionals Aaron & Ben.
I think both boys & the members who played would all agree it was definitely tough conditions with the 45mph gusts of wind today, alongside the on/off rain that followed! The course was in great condition considering it had been shut at the start of the week due to snow and ice. I’m very happy to say me and my partner, set a record for the Pro Am’s, as the first ladies team to win! I’m very pleased to have scored 3 over par myself but when I wasn’t there on holes, Wendy came in with pars and some nett birdies too! We finished with a score of 67. It’s a great first win of the season for me and looks like the extra practice sessions the couple weeks leading up to the Pro Am did me good!

Saffron Walden Golf Club 2019 Junior Programme
The new Junior Programme initiative is to guide more juniors through the levels of golf, improve their swing and knowledge of the sport enough to get them onto the golf course, joining junior membership and representing our golf club.
We are proud to have over 50 juniors playing in many competitions, representing our club in matches and joining in with coaching, working their way into the main squad team, backed up by the development squad team. Our new programme, when into the main season, will start to divide the class into different levels. This gives each junior a chance to work their way through the levels in no time period, to reach the chance to introduce them to the golf course itself. Each level is coached by Sarah Smith, PGA Professional and gives each junior a chance to learn about their swing and improve their game as well as learning about the rules and etiquette. At the end of each level, awards and certificates will be achieved.

Girls Get Together On Sunday this week I arranged a girls get together for the junior members of the Golf Club. We are very lucky to boast 11 female juniors at the club, this is many more than any other clubs in our area.
It’s really important to show the girls that girls can take part in golf, as even though times have moved on, it’s a very male oriented sport! I remember when I was growing up, being one of two girls at Newmarket in the junior section...
The get together is a monthly planned session which involves an hour of coaching, then play a couple of holes. The idea behind it being the girls will get to know the other girls and organise practice sessions, or games! As it’s been pretty chilly this week, it was great to see four come to the session last Sunday and we had five back in December. |
The next one is being planned as we speak for April! |

New shoes? Walk this way... |
Golf is first and foremost a walking sport, with many of us strolling more than five miles in a pair of shoes every single round. You might read that fact and instantly recall getting off the 18th green wanting nothing more than a sit-down, feet aching, after realising your shoes aren’t as comfortable as they ought to be. Well, if that is the case, it might well be time for a change... |
Just arrived - Under Armour Spieth 3 This is the third generation of the Spieth shoe, which - as you can probably guess - has been designed on the back of feedback from superstar Jordan Spieth. It continues with a huge focus on traction and power, with its Rotational Resistance outsole helping you to grip the ground on every shot. In addition to this and its lightweight flexibility, the Spieth 3 also has a Gore-Tex membrane for complete waterproof protection - essential for golf in the UK! |
