What a busy week we have all had playing in the shop. Last Saturday saw the first Captain/Pro challenge of there year where Tony and myself took on the rest of the club and storm Gareth in a 4BBB challenge. I'm delighted to say we actually performed quite well despite both of our opening drives ending up closer to the 18th tee than the 1st fairway. We both managed to get a par then we got going on the next as I holed a putt for a birdie, Tony followed up with three points on the next, I chipped in on the fourth before we came to a bit of a halt by dropping one on the 5th. We soon got going again as I birdied the 6th, Tony got a three pointer on the 8th and we both birdied the 9th.
The back nine proved a bit trickier as the wind picked up but we managed to come back in 19 points to finish with a very respectable 42 points having left a couple out there. In that wind we were very happy, thanks to those who played in it and well done to the five pairs who beat us. |
Essex PGA Winter Pro Am Monday saw the Essex PGA Winter Pro Am held at the club. Three of the home Pro's Aaron, Sarah and myself were playing with members teams and we all faired ok to very well.
I had the dream team of Tony Brown, John Roberts and Mike Price. We got off to a good start as I chipped in for birdie on the first, followed up by a nett birdie on the 3rd and a nett eagle on the 4th from Tony. We went out in five under as I birdie the 9th and I went out in one under on the pro’s card. As we turned back into the breeze we dropped a couple and I dropped four in five holes to fall back to the pack. I managed to par my way in to finish with a disappointing 75 and we managed to pick up a couple as a team to finish on 80 points, -8, in the Pro Am. Normally this wouldn't have been anywhere near but due to conditions and some good pin positions on quick greens we were just off the prizes. As were Aarons team who finished on 82 points. I'm happier to say Sarah finished the job after getting off to a good start by finishing one under and in second position behind Robert Coles who shot two under. Her team went one better by winning on 84 points. Congratulations to Deb, Charlotte and Jaine. |
Thanks to my team for playing and the memories, particularly the conversation regarding club selection for John on the 9th fairway. There can't have been too many pro’s who would have experienced that with their team! |
Slade Two days later was the March Meeting of the Slade. I partnered Robert Register against Nick Wombwell and George Reynolds. We had an interesting game, high on intensity but not really quality. We nicked the front 9 as I chipped in, recurring theme unfortunately means I'm missing greens, by a point. The back half was equally average with lots of two pointers and both teams got to the last all square only for Nick to turn up with a three pointer to win it. This left Robert and me with 36 points and fearing the dreaded PPPP. Fortunately Mark Jones and Hardy came to our rescue with 34 points, the highest total to win the dreaded prize for some time. At the opposite end of the scale was debutant James Rowlandson. Now, you think having a father who has played with the Slade for decades would have helped you to realise it’s not a competition you try to shoot your lights out in. However, James seen keen to impress much to his partner, Ronaldo's amazement. 47 points, a PB this year and a large bill for drinks followed. Thanks to Les as well for his drinks and Trevor. |

The golf wasn't finished there either as Aaron joined the Lemons for their Spring Meeting. As you can see they all tried to attract the flies in their splendid new hats, quite a sight to see them all walking down the fairways in them. I understand a good time was had, a few Limericks were told on the theme of Trumps wall, none of them that repeatable but good fun all the same. The golf continues today as Sarah is in the Brocket Hall Pro Am and Ben is heading down to Essendon for the East Region Tour School on Monday. Best of luck to both of them.

Hole In One
It must be something about Tuesday's and hole in ones. Last month Sue Bowler had one and not to be out done Sonya Penney had one last Tuesday.
Well done ladies!

Snap!
Not quite Ben’s professional swing, but the background’s the same.
It’s the second year we’ve played that course, last time we played the day after the European Tour and the course was set up for the Pro’s - fiendishly difficult!

CAGU Under 12’s Training CAGU had 3 lads (Albie, Oscar and Jack) from SWGC in the Under 12 training on Sunday. The boys really enjoyed themselves at Brampton taking part in 4 holes of greensomes teaching them to work as a pair and choose the drives etc. great stuff. They also had 4 short game challenges in difficult situations teaching them to grip down and club selection etc. Oscar won the nearest the pin on the 4th! It was a fantastic day as part of county set up and a well organised and attended session.
