Welcome to this week’s newsletter. Last Sunday saw the start of the Centenary Celebrations with the planting of the Centenary trees and the unveiling of the clock on the first tee.
John Latham talked us through the history of the real where they were planted and the trees themselves before the Captains and Dignitaries put their backs into it and helped plant the trees.
After that it was a quick walk down the 18th to the first to unveil the new clock on the back of the tee. Personally, I think the Centenary committee have done a great job in choosing this particular one, it stands out on its own as being special but also fits into the backdrop of the golf club.
Doing the planting obviously didn't affect the Captains too much as afterwards they took part in a match against the Chairman’s team which they came out on top.

East Region 4BBB Championship On Monday Aaron and I took part in the East Region 4BBB Championship at Crews Hill in Enfield. |
We had a good game with plenty of birdies, seven in fact but gave too many back. The course was firm and bouncy making it difficult to hold fairways and attack flags. That said our total distance of putts held for the seven birdies was only 15 feet as we managed to get it close. Our undoing came on the 10th and 12th where we both double bogeyed them after finding water on the 10th and then both driving through the fairway on the 12th into trouble.
If we had parred these two we would have comfortably made it but we didn't give up and fought back well to give us hope for next year.

Sarah Smith - WPGA One Day Series (3) Tuesday this week I played my third One Day Series event at Three Rivers Golf Club. Although I heard the rain wasn't too bad here, I think we had most of it over us from hole 2 onwards! I had a steady round, including a birdie and bogey on the front half, staying level after 9, then another birdie on 10 and 2 bogeys on the back half finishing 1 over. I'm really pleased with how I played, although feel like I should have birdied the 17th after leaving myself a 7 iron in on a par 5 and missing the green! |
Rob watched me hit balls in the net Monday afternoon and I think the foot attire of sandals must help with good practice (haha!) After finishing 1 over, some of you may have seen my social media from Tuesday, but I'm so pleased to have come 1st! A huge thank you for all the kind comments too... |
With the first place finish, this has now moved me up the Order Of Merit table also to 3rd place, just 1.5 points away from 1st position. My next event is a One Day Series at South Herts Golf Club on July 1st. I have also entered the Ladies British Open Qualifier on July 15th (my birthday!) at Sandy Lodge Golf Club, it would be great if you could come and watch! |
Daily Mail Foursomes
Report from Stuart Carpenter
Duke and I are through to the 5th round of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition. Apparently, it’s the largest golf competition in the world with around 190,000 entrants, we are down to the last about 130 having won the Jack Griffith last year to qualify. We then have beaten Heydon Grange at home, The Gogs away, Barkway at home and lastly Haverhill away.

Club Champions England Golf Event
Our juniors played in a Club Champions England Golf event on Monday at Bar Hill. This was an 18 hole Stableford and all three played well especially as they needed plenty of water on the way around.
Josh secured 30 points, Leo 39 points and Alex 38.
The team ended up in third place narrowly missing the chance to go the finals at Woodhall Spa.

Coaching Class Sunday this week my Junior Class had week 6 of their programme, we took a trip to the Science Park Par 3 course and played 7 holes in groups of three and four to find a winner! For some of the juniors it was their first time at the par 3 and on a golf course, others were improving scores they had had before. |
It was great to take 16 out of 24 juniors from my two classes up there and I’m very proud of the progress they have been making throughout sessions, for parents too it was great to hear about improvements made since they first saw their child/children’s swing at the start of week 1!
Well done to the winning team - Nancy, Marcia & Will with a score of 42 and second place to Rory, Ava, Maria & Joan with a very close score of 43. It was great to see all the scores between the groups within 8 of each other.

The 10 & 11am classes are now fully booked for the next block of 6 weeks which start on Sunday 16th June but there are still just a couple of spaces left for the new 9am class! Each programme is a structured 6 week course finishing at the par 3 with a competition & watching week.

Friday’s free swing advice |
Golf Nutrition Today’s advice is more about golf nutrition than a swing tip… Are you eating the right things on a golf course & do you have enough to eat on a golf course? Most of my lessons always talk about how they get to holes 14/15 on a steady round then fatigue may hit and their shots start to become inconsistent. Just as an example, on Tuesday at my tournament I burnt 1525 calories in a round and walked 13,327 steps - this is in a day but most of that day was spent on the golf course! On average you burn 1400 calories for 18 holes, seem surprised? Don't forget you walk on average 5 miles for 18 holes…
|
So if you’re eating just one mars bar on the way round that's only 221 calories, therefore a lot more energy is needed for what you’re burning! You can now see why fatigue may hit near the end - especially if you’re eating that chocolate bar after hole 9! Think about this, try swapping the chocolate for a tuna sandwich, chicken wrap, fruit or nuts perhaps - these types of foods don't take long to make and are more of a long term energy source, therefore replacing a larger amount of calories that you’re burning whilst playing! Linking this to your golf swing more importantly, there won't be so much tiredness near the end, you’ll still be alert and fewer mistakes will happen... leading to a better finish going up the 16, 17, 18th!

Time for a little reflection |
Who doesn’t love the month of June? Long evenings, blistering sunshine (might be a little optimistic here) and plenty of opportunities to hit the course. With much of the season left to go and more competitions on the horizon, it’s time to take note of how you’ve been playing so far this year. |
Scenario 1 Hopefully, you've been playing regularly to your handicap or, better still, shooting under it. If that’s the case then happy days, keep up the good work! But we all know there’s room for improvement. Perhaps you don’t use a particular club as often as you could simply out of a lack of confidence with it? Or maybe you’re struggling with a destructive shot that is impacting your scores?
|
Scenario 2 On the other hand, you might be struggling to put a good score together no matter what you try. Some of you may be recalling a lesson you had from several years back or searching the web for a quick-fix only to be suffering further? Whether you’re in need of lessons, new equipment or a confidence boost, make sure you utilise our professional advice and skill set by speaking to a member of the team in-store. |
