Welcome to this weeks newsletter. The weather has really turned good and this weekend looks to be a scorcher, so get yourslef down to the club for a game in the sun! On Thursday I played at Sandy Lodge with Sarah and two Walden members, we had a great game and the course was lovely after they had just held the Men's Open Qualifying there. Read more in Sarah's report below. |
Sarah Smith - Ladies British Open Qualifier
Thursday this week, I went to Sandy Lodge Golf Club to have a practice round for the Ladies British Open Qualifier. It was great to have SWGC members John & Ozzie join me and Rob on the course, although I won’t be mentioning the score! The course played in excellent condition and with the men’s qualifying there this week too, the greenkeepers have maintained the course to a superb standard. It was the first time playing the course and to me it had that links feel about it, I enjoyed the quick greens too!

Don’t forget if you want to come and watch on the day, they’ll be plenty of famous faces to see, and with the club being only just over an hour away it’s not far from us. The date for the pre-qualifier is Monday 15th July, I’m looking forward to having a great caddy on the bag too who’s promised me birthday balloons, haha - Thanks Rob! |
Ladies JW Team
The ladies JW Team had a great on Thursday, winning by 9 points to 5 against Ramsey away.
We just have to wait now for confirmation of the overall league result. We will keep you posted.
Congratulations ladies! |

2019 Squad Members’ Individual Results On 5th and 6th May Josh & Leo were selected to play for the Boy’s U18 Cambridgeshire Team. They spent the weekend away at Gainsborough playing in a mixture of foursomes and singles matches against strong teams from Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. Both boys played very well and managed to gain maximum points for Cambridgeshire which contributed towards a well-deserved victory for Cambridgeshire overall. On Sunday 14th April Josh played in for the SWGC Men’s Scratch Team against Royston. The course was tough, especially on a very windy day. However, Josh managed to keep all square all the way but unfortunately lost on the 18th when his opponent sunk a 20ft putt to claim the match. Josh was also recently selected to represent Suffolk in the England Schools South East final at Flackwell Heath which was an overall victory for Suffolk.

Alex Sparrow has also played for the Ladies Scratch Team, although she ended up losing 3&2. It was a great achievement against a very good Newmarket lady. Alex has also competed in the Hawkstone tournament scoring 85 and 86 in the first two rounds. This ended up 7 shots short of making the cut for the final round, however, Alex then played their Stableford on the final day securing 30 points. It was a very challenging championship course and good experience which helped to prepare her for the season ahead and also gained her the chance to play against some very low handicap players. Jack Sparrow and Oscar Welch have been selected to represent Cambridgeshire in the U12 section on a couple of occasions which has been a great start to their golf season.

Will Mckernan recently played in the IMG Academy Junior World Qualifier at Maylands Park Golf Club in Romford. On a windy day with challenging greens, Will followed an indifferent front nine with an excellent two over par back nine and finishing 16 over which resulted in him clinching one of the qualifying places. He will compete in the 13/14 age group at the IMG junior world championships in July in San Diego California. Will joins over 1000 qualifiers from 56 countries competing in 6 age groups categories in this well-established championships. Good luck Will. |
Friday’s free swing advice |
What’s Your Equipment Telling You? Do you get to wear marks on your glove? Go through gloves too quickly? The answer is to double check you’re gripping correctly! Your grip is a really important factor to make sure your clubface is square through impact, resulting in straight shots. The grip is a basic fundamental as it’s the only connection between us and the club. Someone who grips the club in the palm of the hand, usually resulting in wear marks in the pads as shown in the picture, can lose control of the club through there swing. Gripping the club this way will lead to a slice and lack of distance. |
Try to think about holding your club more in your fingers, a good example of a good grip is throwing a ball, we would never throw a ball from the palm of our hand as it would lack control. Have a look at the picture to see where the club should be placed. A small change to your grip could save you a fortune on gloves too!
Lastly, don’t forget if you keep your glove in the packet every time you’re not using it, this will help prevent it going crumpled up and last a little longer too!

Playing a par-3 over water is as much a mental test as anything else. After all, if it was just light rough between you and the green, would you still hit panic mode? Of course not, so what can you do to keep the nerves at bay and ensure your ball sails safely over the drink? |
| Stay calm and don't panic! |
|
The biggest obstacle to overcome when playing over water is not actually the H2O, but rather your own mental barrier. Here's our advice: - Focus on a point behind the green that is in line with the flag. This can be a tree, branch, it could even be a leaf – anything just so long as it pulls your eye-line away from the wet stuff and closer to the pin
- Stay relaxed. You have hit the ball a million times before so there is no need to panic now
- Stick to your pre-shot routine. This is the best way to stay in the moment and make your next shot seem like any other
These tips will have you relishing those watery par-3s but if you find yourself still struggling with some of the tougher shots in golf, then speak to a member of the team about a lesson so we can iron out any kinks in your game.
