CAGU Scratch League
Saffron Walden has beaten St Neots in their Scratch League match for a 5-1 win to progress to the semi-finals of the CAGU Scratch league. On a pleasant summer’s evening, the Saffron Walden team went up against St Neots on their home course. The first pairing of Parnell and Nuthall played St Neot’s Loveday and Gowling. In a topsy turvy match, the Walden pairing went 1 down early but brought the match back to all square by the turn. On the back 9, there was never more than one in it with both teams having the lead. By the 18th the score was all square where Nuthall had a put to win the match, unfortunately, the put missed high side leaving a draw as the result. In the second match, Southall and Martin took on Cousens and Mynott. Southall and Martin went down early, however, they quickly turned the match around to take a fine win, 3 and 2, continuing their winning form as Walden’s most successful pairing of the season. In the final match, Burlingham and MacDonald also went down early against Haywood and Blows. At the turn, they had brought the match back to all square. On the back nine, Burlingham and MacDonald played solid golf which proved too much for the St Neot’s pairing, taking the match out 2 up. All in all a good result taking Walden through to the semi-finals.
