Friday again? The weeks are flying past! Rob has recovered from having his wisdom teeth out just in time for Tony’s Captains Away Day today, hope the rain holds off for you guys. Whilst myself & Aaron are having a busy Friday in the Pro Shop with the Joshua Tarrant Charity Day.
I think it looks like most of our members have taken over Woburn Golf Club anyway with the Captain! |

Congratulations...
As many of you know, Katie Stevens has been working for us over the summer whilst preparing to go to university this September.
A big thank you has to be said for volunteering to help out with all the Sunday Junior Classes this year, organising GolfSixes matches and your hard work in the shop. The juniors looked up to you as a role model & you will definitely be missed by them all!

This week she got her A-Level exam results, finding out all the hard work has paid off! A huge congratulations for getting an A A B, in politics, sociology & English Language. We are wishing you all the best of luck in your space at Canterbury Uni studying sociology and social policy. |
Jock Stewart Final
Saffron Walden’s Jock Stewart squad travelled to Newmarket Links on Saturday to play the competition final against St Neots over 36 holes. In extremely windy conditions the team started strongly with lead pair Chris and Tim Davey playing some excellent golf to finish the morning session 7up. Simon Hawkins and Chris Reynolds had a much tighter encounter and after being 3up early on lost the 18th hole to go one down at the halfway stage. Ben Gill and Nick Selves were always ahead in their match to take lunch 5up.
With a number of trees succumbing to the wind the afternoon session was at one stage in doubt but the teams agreed to continue with the final round. The afternoon session was a tense affair but Tim and Chris continued to control their match and after losing a couple of holes midway through the round fought back to win 8&6. Simon and Chris fought hard to get back to level in their match before some strong play from the St Neots pairing turned the game in their favour winning the match 5&3.
Ben and Nick maintained their halfway lead early on in the second round, but holes then exchanged hands on a regular basis before St Neots won 4 consecutive holes from the 10th to the 13th to tie the game. The Walden pair then won the 15th and 16th to go two up with two to play. Unfortunately after losing the 17th, an outrageous 7 wood out of the fairway bunker by St Neots ensured they won the hole and tied the game and match. |
With that, it was off to the first tee for a sudden-death playoff where St Neots played steady golf to win the hole and take the trophy.
Thanks to all of the members who travelled to Newmarket to provide their support. The team were bitterly disappointed not to bring home the trophy in our centenary year but they should be proud of their performance in the final and in the other matches throughout the season. |

Junior Team Vs Thorpewood
On Monday 12th August the junior team went to play Thorpewood in their next division 1 match. There were some great matches and the team fought hard to have some very close finishes but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and we ended up narrowly losing.
The team thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon, making use of their fantastic double-storey driving range and then the Domino’s Pizza match tea finished it off nicely.

Hole More Putts
Last week you checked your posture for a full swing, now you're hitting more greens - let’s hole more putts!
By nature, posture during a putting stroke setup can either feel very odd or you set up where your comfortable. There are two variations as a coach I usually see with links to swing faults and missing putts...
|
| 1- Too straight upright, no bend in the legs, arms too straight and their eyes outside the ball to target line. |
| 2- Slouchiness in the posture, knees too bent, weight too much on the heels of your feet and eyes inside the ball to target line. |
|
Neither of these postures will lead to a good putting stroke. The arms will work separately to the hands, therefore, leading to putts which go speeding past or coming up short. Is this you? |
Your putting stroke should be controlled by your shoulders acting like a pendulum, the length of the swing is the only thing that changes for distance, your tempo should stay very similar for each putt no matter what the distance. To create a good pendulum, it’s important to set up correctly...
- Arms relaxed down - Ball slightly forward of centre in the stance - Your eyes directly over the ball - Your hands and arms should work as one to create that pendulum stroke
|
|
Next week, I’ll be looking into if you’re using the correct putter for your stroke! |
