There's a number of reasons the ball is positioned opposite the left heel with the driver. First and foremost it’s where you can deliver the most speed in the swing. The modern golf ball is designed to be hit hard and launched higher than twenty years ago. This brings us onto the second reason, launch angle. Depending on clubhead speed this can be between 10-17 degrees. Again this is higher than twenty years ago but the ball doesn’t spin as much so manufacturers over the past few years have been promoting a higher ball flight to get more distance. I’ve found that with my current driver that I’ve had for 18 months now I’ve been able to generate 5 MPH more clubhead speed. As I’m on a strict gym avoidance scheme I know it’s not me that’s created this extra speed but the club. I've had to change my launch slightly to accommodate it but as a result, I’ve found extra yardage. Finally and arguably the most important reason why the ball is opposite the left heel is that it allows the club to get back to the square, therefore, hitting straight shots. Thanks to all those who attended, hope to see you up on the range working on the changes. Next week’s senior's clinic is iron play, I hear Callum has been working on his demonstrations in slow motion to give you a chance to see his ball flight too!
