A Trip To Hunstanton

On Wednesday Sarah and I went to practice for the Sunningdale Foursomes next week by taking a trip to Hunstanton with Ben Gill and Andrew Woosey.

You are only allowed to play 2 balls round Hunstanton so it was a perfect chance to practice our foursome domestic arguments, particularly after Sarah’s opening tee shot which I will let you ask her about.

As you can see the weather was lovely which makes links golf idyllic, they were doing a bit of work on the greens but they actually rolled really well. Because of how low lying it was there were areas of the course that had a lot of water still there, especially in bunkers.

This puts things into perspective of how well our course has stood up to the wet winter we have had plus the fantastic work Ian and the guys have done out there. Looking out there today the greens look incredible for this time of year and are rolling really well ready for tomorrow’s medal.

2018 vs 2020

Neal currently has a standard set, black dot, PING G15 irons brought ‘off the shelf’ 5/6 years ago. Today he was fitted for a new set of irons and the decision is going to be made going forwards with the change or not, shortly. (Only time will tell!)

However, what I wanted to point out to you was the importance of being measured and custom fitted properly for your equipment - and at SWGC, IT’S COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE!

Neal’s current set of PING's are standard length, but with Neal being 6ft3 tall, they weren’t helping his golf posture and also some days giving him backache after a round. Just by lengthening a club half an inch can make a huge difference to your posture allowing an easier shoulder turn, better strike and ball flight + no fewer risks to aches & pains!

Neal has been fitted for clubs which are 1 1/2 inches longer than his current set, this is a huge change but just by completing some dynamic measurements and set up changes whilst testing, we already saw a huge difference in results of the irons we tried becoming more consistent

Short Game Clinic

Centenary Junior Coaching Programme

Dates:

Sundays, 9-10am, 10-11am or 11-12 noon

8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th March and 5th April

Par

Video analysis during coaching sessions and monthly reports back to parents.
Life skills such as learning golf etiquette.
Skills challenges and games during the coaching sessions to improve team bonding.

Birdie

Video analysis during all coaching sessions, monthly report back to parents.
Par 3 course access at Great Chesterford to practice, April - Sept for £5 pp.
Coaching on all parts of the game.

Eagle

Junior competitions are held monthly to introduce you to a real golf course, blue tees at the 150-yard markers allow a shortened version of a golf hole. Juniors who are ready to venture out on the course can play twice in a junior competition for £1 before being invited to junior membership.
Half price range balls.
Coaching on all parts of the game includes more advanced subjects such as playing off slopes and hills.

Junior Academy and Membership

Half price range balls, bar and restaurant discount as a junior member
A chance to play for the Junior Squad and Development team and to represent the club in matches.

The art of putting

‘Drive for show, putt for dough’. No doubt you have heard this one a few times before but considering putting equates to between 30 to 50% of our shots on the course, it also has a large element of truth in it.

The whole puzzle

If you're considering buying new irons this year, have a think about how they are going to blend into the rest of your set. The idea is to have equal yardage gaps between each club in your bag so, if you are going to treat yourself, it might be worth replacing a long iron with a hybrid that is easier to hit.

Take danger out of play

The illustration here is a good example of where a hybrid comes in handy. When our driver brings danger into play and a long-iron leaves us too far to the green, a hybrid is the perfect option.
