Welcome to this week's newsletter from Saffron Walden GC, bringing you the latest news and offers. We hope you're having a great week on and off the golf course. Enjoy the read. |
Where To Start? Where do you start with the week that’s happened? I’ll try with a bit of golf first and I’m pleased to say, as much as you can be when you’ve been beaten that the winners of the Sunnigdale Foursomes were the pair that knocked us out. They looked like a good combination and so they proved to be all week. Lilly May Humphreys and William Percival breaded there way to the final where they beat ex European tour winner Roger Chapman and his partner Ben Holden on the last hole. Lilly certainly has a big future in the game with her ambitions of making it to the LPGA tour next season so keep an eye out for her on your television set next year. |
Slade News Following the news that the Premier League season, US Masters, US PGA, cricket, snooker rugby and many more events have all been postponed the latest drastic sporting casualty was the Slade been cancelled. Despite many members willing to see if red wine could build up enough immunity to get you through the pandemic, the right decision was made this week to cancel events in the clubhouse to limit the spread of the virus. Instead, we just had a game on the course which wasn’t going to make the newsletter until the results were read out and we saw who had come last. Out came the PPPP and for the first time, Ian Cambridge and the defending champion Kieran O’Reilly won. Some bloke called Price and his partner won but that was less important. |

Virus Update As you will know the club are sending out regular updates when needed. We are following government guidelines if anything changes, we will let you know. It’s refreshing to see people out still playing, even if they are not coming into any of the buildings at least they are able to get out and get some exercise and enjoy their golf. It’s at times like this that we are reminded that although we may play at different times and not always bump into one another we are part of a good club and community at Saffron Walden. We have had lots ring up to make sure we are ok or just for a chat and long may this continue. We appreciate that a lot of you will not be venturing down for the foreseeable future, you will be missed, and we all wish you the best, stay safe and look after yourselves. If any of you are really struggling to get essentials, looking round me preferably golf balls and gloves, or realistically maybe even food and drink, at times like this please email one of us and we will try our best to help you out. Despite how we look some mornings, especially after Slade functions we are all relatively fit and healthy so we should bounce through this and if we can help, we will. For the rest of you stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you over the weekend. competitions are running as normal and the course is playing well.

Seniors Vs Juniors After a gap of several years, the Seniors played the Juniors last Sunday morning. The Seniors knew that the odds were heavily stacked against us. In the past at the same time as giving more than two shots a hole we were outdriven and completely outplayed. This year was slightly different. In some of the matches the Seniors were given shots. Josh Izod plays off 5 and some recent Juniors, Jamie Price and Jonny Jenkins are also single figure players and were delighted to be selected. Special thanks must go to Amanda Izod and our Club Captain, Janina Jones for organising the Juniors team and setting up the match. On the morning of the match, Jamie Sparrow had flu-like symptoms so Janina became an honorary Junior. She gave a motivational speech to the team, telling them to win by a dog's licence. This needed some explanation to her team, but it certainly inspired them. The Seniors Team looked good on paper. We had a past Club Captain, most of the Senior's Committee, as well as our current Chairman and Club Treasurer. Many of the team regularly play in inter Club matches and perform well. Our Lead match involved Mark Jones and Clive Walker playing the Junior Vice-captain, Olly Lathan and Oscar Ward. We halved the first hole but were soon two down. Olly demonstrated perfect etiquette when Clive had a senior moment and picked up his marker, not realising that he had a two foot putt to win the hole. Olly allowed the Seniors Captain to replace his ball without penalty. Somehow the ball then defied gravity by passing over the hole and finishing just behind it. Still, it was a hard-earned half. Mark won the 10th, to bring us back to all square. Oscar hit a wonderful shot onto the 11th green and the ball just lipped out for a gross birdie (please ignore the nett score). His Dad was very relieved as a hole in one would have been expensive. Olly then showed his skill by chipping in for a 3, nett 2 on the 13th. Very soon, we knocked elbows with the score at 4 & 3. There were similar stories in the later matches. It was usually close at the turn but then the Juniors, switched on the afterburners. After the match, we all enjoyed a burger and chips, followed by the usual speeches. Clive claimed that the score was irrelevant. But it is difficult to deny that a whitewash is something of a humiliation. The Seniors did take two of the matches to the last hole, so these games were almost as good as halves. Olly gave a very gracious response thanking the Seniors, the Catering Team and the Organisers. Janina came up with a new term, "puppy license" after several of the matches ended 5 and 4. With the rapid development of the Coronavirus crisis, this might be the only match we play for some time. Everyone agreed, that this is now a permanent fixture and we look forward to our match in 2021.

County triumphant against Bedfordshire The county started their preparation for the league season with a convincing victory at Bourn GC against Bedfordshire. In the opening foursomes Captain Craig Thorburn and his partner Paul Hodgkin played Craig and Spooner. In a tight match with some early season rusty play the CAGU pairing won 1 up. Next up fresh from winning the last winter series, Joe York and his partner George Howard took on Lovell and Osbourne. They wore their opposition down with some powerful golf and the CAGU pairing won 2&1. |

A further win followed for County B team captain Isaac Rowlands and his fellow Ely partner James McLaughlin 3&2. A half followed for Callum Brookes and George Whitehall, before Tom Rogers and 14 year old Jake Plumb in his debut won 3&1. The last pairing of Owen Davies and Luke Bowers lost 2&1 to Armitage and Manley. So after the morning foursomes CAGU took an impressive lead 4.5 to 1.5. In the afternoon singles, Howard played blistering golf with birdies on 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and a hybrid in the stream. He went on to win 6&4. Captain Craig came back to earth after winning the Winter series and fought hard but lost 3&2 to Darnell. Hodgkin wore his opposition partner down winning 4&3. He was one down early on but with 2 birdies never looked back. Joe York our new boy to CAGU golf continued his impressive morning start and outgunned his opponent 5&3. Callum Brookes continued the early wins for CAGU slotting home 2 birdies to finish 2 under par and winning 5&3. The two U18 players fought hard but unfortunately lost -Whitehall losing 5 &4 to Craig. Plumb was 2 down with 4 to play and fought back to 1 down but lost after halving the 18th. It was left to James McLaughlin to seal the victory with steady golf delivering a victory 5&4. The remaining matches came in with Luke Bowers losing 2&1and Tom Rogers 4&3. Rowlands won 4&3 and Owen Davies 2&1 to complete the victory 11.5 to 6.5. Graham Goodman our Director of County teams was impressed with the victory. He said “We had a successful Winter Series which meant the boys came into our first serious match golfed in. Special mention must be made to our county debutant, Joe who scored maximum points. Also scoring maximum points were George, Isaac and James. We introduced some U18 players into the match and they performed admirably- George gaining a half in his foursomes and Jake winning his foursomes and fighting hard to only lose 1 down in his singles. Thanks go to Bourn GC for hosting and for setting up the course well in wet challenging conditions” Click here to see the full results |

Have You Missed Your Holiday? Have you missed out on your holiday because of Covid 19? Here are two Tuition Breaks I’m running which you may be interested in... Here’s what Suzanne had to report on last years: "My recent Tuition break at the Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort and Elea Golf Club more than surpassed all my expectations, having not booked this type of holiday before I was a little unsure as to what to expect! If you are looking to have personal daily attention from the very professional Sarah Smith and stay in a beautiful resort and play on some great courses this is the holiday for you. Each day started with some group and one to one training, tips on chipping/putting/swing and clubs to use were all covered before heading out to play in some breath-taking scenery. The group were extremely sociable, lots of post match analysis, chat and laughter over a glass or two pre dinner with time to spare to head out to enjoy the other facilities if required.' If you’re considering a new driver, it’s usually because you’re either missing too many fairways or your current one isn’t going as far as you’d like. You’re certainly not alone if you fit into this bracket, so why not join many other golfers by coming down to Saffron Walden Golf Club and booking in for a driver fitting with one of the team? |
The perfect scenario This illustration is ideal for the majority of us: a new driver that goes further and with a tighter dispersion than our current one. However, with so many options available, it’s often a tricky puzzle of which shaft, loft and head combination performs best in YOUR hands that needs solving. Luckily, this is an area that we are professionally trained in! We have plenty of options in-store for you to try, including the awesome Mizuno ST200 driver that should be at the top of your list. Call us on 01799 527728 to book in with the team. | |
