As it turned out and to the green staffs credit they were able to get the course fit to play within twenty minutes of the rain stopping and get everyone back out there.
Ladies Event The golf didn’t disappoint after that. In the ladies event, Alex Sparrow took the overnight lead with a 79 and Jo Malgiano shot five under handicap to lead with a 67 in the nett competition. In the men’s championship, Rob Duke lead the Summer Cup after opening with a nett 69 and it was tight at the top as the last group in all finished close in the gross event with Richard Southall having a one shot lead over Callum after they shot 71 and 72 respectively. Day two and the weather held off for us again. The course was a bit softer and greens slower but scoring continued to below. In the ladies, Alex shot 73 to win comprehensively and Jo Magliano hung on to win her first tournament victory since re-joining and her first since she was a junior here.
Seniors News The seniors was won by Kevin Hayes for the third year on the bounce with a 76, yet again pipping John Roberts to the title. Well done Kevin, as ever very consistent golf.
Summer Cup In the men’s Summer Cup Rob Duke played steady golf to clinch victory over Ossie Esterhuizen whilst Richard triumphed for the third time in 5 years in the Championship. Having watched the back 9 with my glamorous assistant, Johnny, you could see Richard was in control of his game and played steady sensible golf picking off birdies on the par fives and staying away from dangerous flags. Callum had to chase it on the back half and his championship went on the 14th in attempting to drive the green. Round of the day came from runner up Louis Martin with a 73.
Well Done To Everyone Involved Well done to everyone who took part, especially the winners and those who put up with the worst of the weather on Saturday morning. A big thanks to John and Andy behind the bar on Saturday morning. They had an unexpected full clubhouse by 9.30am, normally this wouldn’t have been a problem but with the new rules for safe social distancing in place, they had to have it mapped out perfectly and that they did just that. . What they also managed to do with their practical thinking and bedside manner was to create a fantastic atmosphere in there where everyone was comfortable, safe and had a smile on their faces. Also thank you to whoever it was who started the singing for my birthday when I walked in to announce the course was reopening. I thought I might get away with it and didn’t expect to be sung to by a packed clubhouse! A final thanks to the emergency competition committee who met on Saturday morning. It didn’t look possible at one point but with the knowledge and hard work of the greens staff we were able to make the right decision and get back out to play. It turned out to be a great weekend and a memorable one which the club championships should always be.
