Report on Ladies V Seniors Match - Monday 7 September Janina Jones and I have been very keen to reschedule the annual Ladies V Seniors match that was originally planned for May. Due to COVID restrictions we weren’t able to have as many players as we would do normally, something we look forward to restoring next year. We were able to do so on Monday 7 September. As Janina had to return to school, she asked Lynda Minton to lead the Ladies Team. There was plenty of discussions about which tees to use, the number of adjustment shots and rumours that bribes were offered to Ian Cambridge to move the tee positions. We eventually agreed to play 4 pairs per team using the yellow and red tees. I played in the first match with Andy Edwards against Lynda Minton and Pat Taylor. Lynda normally plays off 10 but even with 2 "adjustment shots" she still had to give us shots. Lynda played some great golf with plenty of support from Pat. Lynda either parred or had a bogey on every hole. Fortunately for me, Andy was on good form and I had three pars on the front nine. As I had a shot on the 7th Lynda's par wasn't good enough to halve the hole. We were five up at the turn before the girls won three holes in a row. Suddenly the pressure was on and by the 17th tee, our lead was cut to one. Andy managed a five which gave us the win. The other three matches were equally close. A highlight was some bunker play on the 18th by the final group. Michelle Brown and Baron Gotfraind both found the bunker closest to the patio. With all the other groups sitting on the patio, there was plenty of banter. The Baron was first to play and he made sure that he cleared the bunker ending up by the first tee. Michelle played a far more sophisticated shot giving her the chance of a par put. We didn't announce the score. Although mention was made that the Seniors know what it feels like to suffer a whitewash after playing the Juniors earlier in the year. There are two prizes for this match; a silver plate and a wooden spoon. The silver plate was located in the trophies cabinet but we struggled to find the wooden spoon. Eventually, Jonathan found it hidden on top of the lockers in the Ladies Changing room. I hope that it will be more visible in future. Lynda presented the plate and once engraved I shall keep it in pride of place on my mantlepiece for a few weeks. Pat kindly accepted the wooden spoon to hand on to Janina. Special mention to Hannah and her team who provided a fine spread of sandwiches and chips in the clubhouse. The Ladies also bought the wine to celebrate the event. Janina and I are so pleased that we rescheduled this match. It is so important for the different sections of our club to encourage and support each other. Clive Walker - Seniors Captain |
