Only 10 days to go! Not long now before you can all attempt the new booking system and get yourselves booked in and ready to play. It does seem to have been the hardest of the lockdowns we’ve had, maybe it’s the length or the time of the year or because it’s the third one or maybe a combination of all three. In any case, we are nearly there. Over the past few weeks its been great to see members back out there helping the green staff out clearing the leaves, fallen branches, divoting tees and stripping ivy off the walls. It’s made a huge difference and made the course look even better. |
You will see later in the newsletter Aaron has written his goodbye and thank you letter to all the members. Firstly thanks for all the nice emails and messages sent in, I know he will appreciate them. Secondly, if you would like a lesson with him before he leaves you will have three weeks once we reopen so please contact him now as he’s taking bookings. |
Moving On A fond farewell to all of you as I move on to pastures new! Saffron Walden Golf Club will always be close to my heart. I did my PGA training here, initially under Philip Davis and I completed my degree under Rob McNicholas. I gained so much experience here over the last ten years working at such a busy, prestigious golf club. There is such a diverse nature to this job, every day was different to the one before. The experiences gained, challenges faced and life lessons have been invaluable and I've had the added bonus of making some incredible friends and acquaintances along the way. |

I have so many memories, too many to mention but some of the ones that stand out for me are, the low round (that I needed to score) to pass my playing ability test to get the job in the first place. I was under pressure but was so relieved to shoot level par to get through the test and then I was thrown in at the deep end as I'd never worked at such a busy club before! The two holes in one I had on the 7th and 18th holes were special for me as they happened doing charity beat the pro events at the club. I'm not sure it counts if you are hitting the same shot over and over!! Being on the winning Pro-am Team as a Professional at Saffron Walden and shooting twenty one under collectively will always be memorable to me especially as we won at "home". Rob and I qualifying two years in a row in the PGA 4BBB was exciting for me and great to play on a national level again. Finally, getting to know so many members better and playing other courses in competitive Pro-ams was such a thrilling part of my work. As my time at Saffron Walden winds down I can't help but reflect on all of the wonderful people I've met. It's hard to believe I have been here for nearly a decade! It has been a privilege to be part of such a wonderful golf club with such friendly members. I've grown so much as a coach in both technique and confidence. While I am excited about my new opportunity at Bourn, there is a big part of me that is sad to be saying goodbye to the friends I have made over the last ten years. I hope to meet up with you all again in the near future. It has been a pleasure teaching at Saffron Walden Golf Club, thank you for the opportunities given to me here and I wish you all nothing but the best. Keep safe and swinging smoothly. Aaron Howard Should you wish to book in for a lesson, I am still working until the 18th of April. Please contact me on 07768686865 or at the proshop on 01799 527728 - (29th of March onwards). |

| | | Deja vu After a crazy few days of the good, the bad & the ugly at TPC Sawgrass, we appeared to have a repeat of the previous week’s Sunday shoot-out between Bryson DeChambeau and Lee Westwood at the Players Championship… We didn’t know it at the time but the winner was ultimately decided on the fourth hole. Bryson topped his tee-shot into the water before Westwood sliced his into the drink. Having made a double-bogey six and a bogey respectively, suddenly Bryson and Lee seemed very relatable! In the end, it was Justin Thomas who came through the chasing pack to claim a one-shot victory after what he described as “one of the best rounds of my life tee-to-green.” If you have trouble off the tee – topping, slicing or anything else – we can certainly help you out.
