Captain's Drive In

Finally, the course has been able to reopen after lockdown 3.0 came to an end for golf clubs. Things started early on Monday morning as our Captains Lynda and Mark were able to officially drive-in, some four months after their year started. The putt out was done differently this year too with half of it done from Wales as Colin putted out in his front room.

That left Janina to face the slope on 18, something she accomplished in two strokes despite the greens being so slick we could barely place the ball at the top.

The drive-in themselves were good too with everyone getting off the first time despite their outfits. For the record Mark hit 192 yards and Lynda 117. Best of luck to them both for their year, the same goes for Oliver and Eric. Fingers crossed we will have a clean run through now for the rest of the year.

Great To Be Back

It's been a lovely week so far, seeing some of you for the first this year and having people back on the course. Hope you’ve enjoyed playing and hitting balls again. I think we’d all agree the course is in great condition for the time of year, all the work carried out by the green staff and the volunteers in recent weeks has made a difference. I managed to get out and play today for the first time this year, to say it was rusty would be an understatement but it was nice to be out there all the same.

The new bunkers on 6,7 and 8 look really nice as do all the upgrades on the other bunkers where the liners have been installed and the surrounds improved. All we need now are a few more days like Tuesday and we can get some growth on the trees.

Good luck to all those braving competitions this week, you will see the note regarding knock out comps from the office that they have been extended. It would be good to have as many as we can before the draw so if you want to enter please email in or sign up online.

Another great achievement during lockdown is the completion of England Golf’s SafeGolf accreditation!

What Is SafeGolf?

‘It’s the way to show that your club meets high standards to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. We think it’s the most important thing we can all do for our sport.’ - England Golf

With this accreditation, it means the Golf Club can run campaigns like ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ & continue on to the next step to achieve GolfMark.

Major season kicks off this week

European golf fans, cover your eyes! The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play was not pretty viewing for Padraig Harrington & Co. as the States dominated, with Billy Horschel defeating Scottie Scheffler in a scrappy final. Who can blame them considering it was their 7th match in just four days!

The Major Championship season kicks off this week as the world’s best lady golfers head to California for the ANA Inspiration. Last year’s tournament saw Mirim Lee shock everyone with a comeback win including two chip-ins, an 18th-hole eagle and a three-way playoff! A host of the game’s stars, including the Korda sisters (Nelly & Jess), Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang have all been in fine form this year. It’s destined to be a cracker!

Hopefully, it won't be long before you're teeing up in major club competitions once again, so why not book yourself in for a lesson or two to sharpen up your game?

Staying grounded this season

You quite literally want to stay grounded as you play golf this year. I’m not expecting you to float away like a balloon, but without the right footwear there is a chance that your ball will.
