Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.
Last weekend saw the County Championships held at the club and the course stood up to be a rigorous test for all the players involved. Our players had mixed fortunes, of the 12 entrants from the home club, 6 qualified for the last day.
After finishing runner up in the Welsh mid-amateur last week Mark Reeve carried on his impressive form before tiredness hit to finish 4th with scores of 72, 73, 73 and 76 for 294. He now leads the UK mid-am order of merit.
In 6th place was Ryan Adair with a score of 303.
Other notable performances were from
Spencer Burlingham which included one round of 74 to finish 15th. Also
Callum Brookes who started with a round of 89 but followed up with a superb 2nd round score of 73 to finish on 324 and 25th place.
In the top 30 were also
Michael Brookes in 23rd, and the young evergreen
Steve Plumb in 27th place.
Mark played in the final group over the weekend with
James Reeson from Brampton Park and
Paul Hodgkin from Ramsey. It was Reeson who triumphed overall with a total of 284 -4 for the weekend, winning by three shots which included a superb second round 67 in wet conditions.
This week also saw Aaron and I try to recreate the form that took us to St.Mellion last year in the PGA 4BBB championships. I'm happy to say that on Monday at Bush Hill Park we did exactly that, even shooting the same score, 64, as last year. We even had the same bad practice round at our own track the Thursday before!
The course seems to suit us at Bush Hill Park, it's not the longest but rewards consistent straight hitting, and the greens are always in good condition so you fancy your chances of holing some putts.
We got off to a good start with Aaron making birdie on 2, I followed that up with one at the 3rd and after negotiating the next section of tricky holes, I managed a birdie 2 at the 6th.
Aaron holed a couple of clutch par putts over the next two holes to keep the momentum going. I managed two more 2's on the back 9 taking us to -5 with the final two to play. Aaron found the green side bunker on the par 5 17th in two and managed to play a fantastic uphill 30yard shot to 6ft and hole the putt for a birdie. This got us to -6 with only the 18th, which is normally the first and a tricky par 3, to play. We both found the sand in style with Aaron in particular managing to short side himself to perfection. I had the easier shot and knocked it to 18 inches and get a par, meaning we matched our score of -6 last year.
Only 12 teams from the region go through and we had a five hour wait to see if we had made it. It was all pretty close at the top but we managed to come fifth avoiding the playoff by a shot. Next up is Carden Park in Cheshire in August for the finals.
Over the past 6 weeks we have been running our second trial get into golf sessions for ladies. This year has proven as successful as last year and we have had 24 players join the classes.
This Thursday is the climax of the lessons where we will introduce them to the ladies section and get them out on the course.
If any of the ladies section are free on Thursday evening it would be great for you to come along to take them onto the course. It starts at 6.30pm and there will be drinks and a bite to eat after.
