Hello and welcome to this week's newsletter.
The practice range has been busy this week with people trying to fine tune their game for the club championships. The course is still firm and bouncy, but the greens are holding so it should be a fair test for all those who are playing. One name who will not be on the list this year is two time champion Cam. With regret Cam has given me notice of his position and is leaving the club as a member of staff to take up a different line of work, and this weekend will be away on a training day as part of his induction as a trainee engineer and architectural technician (a natural step as potential golf pro!) Even though this didn't come as a shock to me, a big part of me was sad for Cam that he felt he didn't want to take the next step and join the PGA.
Over the past two years working at the club he has developed into a very reliable employee. Every new responsibility given to him he has handled brilliantly, his product knowledge has grown and he is fantastic with members and visitors, he will be very difficult to replace and as an elite golfer he is quite unique as he's actually better than he thinks he is. Unfortunately from mine and the clubs point of view I believe he has made the correct decision and I'm glad he has found a pathway into a good career.
Hole in one
After many close shaves we had a hole in one by a junior in the Saturday morning lessons. I'm sure many of you are used to seeing us play the 18th hole on a Saturday morning as a climax to the junior lessons, well last week Josh Sugg holed a 5 iron from the red markers. Just reward for the dedication and hard work Josh has put in over the years, and in particular with last weeks lesson he has worked hard to change his swing.
The only thing is it did rather kill off the competition despite others hitting the green!
As tradition has it, Josh signed the book and went straight to the club house to buy everyone a drink. As luck would have it, and probably much to the relief of his grandad Brian, the only person in the bar at 9.45am was Raff so we decided not to bother and headed to the Pro Shop for a bottle of pop.
Well done Josh!
